Wanting to buy a good Ludwig vintage kit... Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I want to buy a good Ludwig vintage kit. Any thoughts or advice. I have a 1979 5x14 super-sensitive that I found in the bottom of a bunch of cases and drum bags at a music store. Got it for a steal and restored it back to playing condition. Now I want to add more Ludwigs. Can anyone give me their thoughts on these two possibilities? Good price? Stay away from them or bid?

I'd keep looking. Too high for butcher block. They go low. Just pretty ugly. The rewrap set's got problems if it's loose on the bass.

Here's a good deal on a Standard.Neat color. Same shells as Classic. Guitar Center #108168269

I'd probably go with this Champagne sparkle, $999.00 GC #107365202

I've got a clear interior 3ply, that's been wrapped in red oak I'm thinking of selling. They are the best of the the classic Ludwigs. *Really* good sounding, maybe the best Luddies I've owned, great looking. Wrap done by a pro shop. Gotta clear room. I'd make you a heck of a deal on them. Gotta clear some space, and I need a bop set!

Personally I think the green sparkle is not that bad a deal, they probably used the tape which is why the wrap on the bass is loose. The main question is what do you want to spend and what sizes are you thinking of? The Super Classics, 22, 16, 13 are more desirable these days (according to who's who) and a kit without mods figure between $900 and $1400 dependent on finish. Standards, although the same shells, are still standards, funky wraps and lugs.

I also like the re wrapped Green sparkle for 500 to 600 bucks if you want a players kit, if you are looking for a kit to collect then keep looking the butcher block is in nice shape but i unwanted color so for collecting not to good .

Where are you located? I will be selling a very nice red ruby Ludwig Strata shortly. I am in SE Michigan. The snare shown has already been sold. These are dated 1968.

If I had the extra money...I would buy these. He just dropped the price. The seller is great. I bought a set off him last year and it was in great shape. These look even better.

I like the re wrap for 500.00 to 600.00,closer to 500.00,but it would give you that classic late 60's early 70's ludwig sound, and they offered that kit in green sparkle,so it is period correct, not an investment /collectable kit,but not priced like one either.

The butcher block is 70's ,3 ply also, like the Green kit some of the best shells Ludwig made, priced a little high, because it is Butcher Block,750.00 850.00 sounds much better IMO.However that formica BB wrap is nearly indestructible, and some people like it,but it does affect price.

The 1500.00 kit is a sweet one from a collector / historic standpoint and a good deal considering the condition and originality.

Those three kits are a good example of the level of vintage drum/ Luddy offerings .
