Weird Ludwig color -- "Blue and Olive Oyster"? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

Well if history is any judge then I will start liking that color in about 30 years!

I never cared for the oyster wraps or the psyc wraps back when they came out. I especially did not like blue oyster pearl. Now when I see those kits I find them far more attractive. Very odd I think. Must be the nostalgia kicking in.

To me that wrap is a bullseye! It calls retro 70's style immediately.

Maybe this color was planned but abandoned? It's a natural follow to blue olive

badge.

thats a neat item that ludwig has designed. it is adjustable on the back side to fit different size lug patterns(not big enough for clubdate lugs though. could be great for adding floor tom legs to a drum without having to drill holes. lugs/mount all together.mike

The ATLAS mount is actually very cool, and also very versatile. Primarily a tom mount option - it has already replaced their Vibra-Band (RIMS) mounting system - it also serves as flor tom leg mounts, and lets you add accessories to the kick such as cymbal L-arm and cowbell. You can even take a virgin kick and add gullwing spurs without drilling. I suppose the applications are limited by imagination, and budget. :) And, space - they have a rather tall profile for now. Actually, on mounted toms, they take up less space than the corresponding RIMS and extended mount, and the mounted and floor toms at NAMM sounded great... just like they had RIMS.

Here's the info on it:

For the new finish, the drums at Bentley's (in the ebay auction) and a kit at Pro Drum in Hollywood were culled from the giant display kit at NAMM, which Ludwig called the birthday cake kit (I still don't see it, although a few friends saw it and also said it looked like a cake...)

Sorry for the bad cellphone pic...

People either love or hate the finish, I'm right in the middle. I think it's cool, but I probably wouldn't take it on a gig.

I'm not sure I've seen this new Ludwig offering "birthday cake" referred to as such anywhere in their materials. Me no like personally ... I'm more into bowling balls.

That's just what the Ludwig people were calling it, they have a few different pet names for finishes, just as the drummers do (such as "bowling ball".)

We just got one in at the shop where I work... go figure, everybody that comes in loves em. The wrap is quite nice in person. Photos don't quite capture it. It will look nice under lights. I think Ludwig will sell a few of the new susp tom mounts. They are small, work well and don't detract from the vintage look.

If the shaft is small enough - 12.7mm or about 1/2" - it will absolutely work for mics.
