Wfl - 1930's toms Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I bought these up on eBay a few weeks ago and just picked them up a few days ago. I was interested mostly in the 12.14 tom....because of the rare WF Ludwig label. I have an old WFL tom with a tacked reso head with one of these labels but it's in al lot rougher shape than this one.

The 9x13 has an aluminum foil badge. I have Rob Cook's Ludwig book and I can't see this badge in there. There are some aluminum badges but not one that says just Chicago at the bottom like mine. And they're 'Wartime' badges - I'm assuming 1940's......Is my drum a 40's = not a 30's??

The heads on both these drums are in very good condition considering they look like they're the original heads.

I like the old canvas bags that came with the drums almost as much as the drums themselves. They're in very good shape. The 13 tom has push-snaps and the other 'clasps.'

The hoops are in amazing condition. They were very dirty...but that's all - they cleaned up beautifully. One t-rod looks like a replacement - it's about 1/4" shorter than the rest but it fits just fine and looks pretty much identical to the other ones. All the screws, washers and other parts look like they all belong together with this drum. When I took the heads off they came off like they had been on the drums for a very long time.....that dirty...sticky feeling feeling when pulling them off. The inside of the shells were very clean. The 14 has a white painted interior (as many Ludwig drums do) - the 13 is clear.

I took all the hardware off and cleaned the shells - just washed and waxed. Some of the hardware was a little rusty and was easily cleaned using vinigar.

The 13 shell has some rash in one area. It actually looks like someone put some very sticky duct tape on it and then ripped it off.

Here is the 14" tonight sitting in with my 50's Gretsch orphan kit.

Beautiful Wfl's. the only problem with this era of wfl's they have almost no bearing edge profile to them, literally flat edges. they tend to sound kinda dead sounding, see if that is your findings Gary?

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

The edges are not flat on mine.

I'll try to send photos later today. I have the 14 with the Gretsch kit pickured above. The tom does sound a little dead....that could be because of the very old thick natural heads. The reso heads almost look and feel like Pigskin(?)...or just very thick calf. I may sand the heads down - that should bring a bit more sharpness to the tone.

The lugs on the bigger tom are something new to me. They're about the 4th or 5th different pre-war WFL lug I've seen. Nice looking drums!

That's good to hear Bun ('nice looking drums!") - ya...I don't know much about Ludwig or WFL drums.....only Gretsch...and very little at that haha. The lugs on the larger drum are nice -compact - and seem to be well made....lots of really cool little parts on these drums.

Here's what the edge looks like on the 14 batter-side. It's cut pretty good as you an see. I think if I were to put new calfhide or even modern plastice heads on these they'd sing.

Gary your bearing edges are sharper than all of my zephyr lugs drums I have owned other than the bass drum they have a 45 degree edge on them.

I've just found out that my 14, at least, is a 1936.

Very nice toms, Gary...I see the Ludwig key on the 14 in the one pic...I will take some pics for your this weekend...

I enjoy these early drums (pre 40`s)...I think that the builder`s attention to detail and excellent craftsmanship went into each of them...

Enjoy these!!

Cheers
