I'll keep the ported head when we use a soundman, they freak out when they don't see a hole for the mic. Eye Ball Amatures!

I had one at Scout Bar in Houston one night say, "Where's your hole? I need a mic hole." He was perplexed and didn't quite know what to do. We were opening for a national act that night, so I humored him, and allowed him to cut a small port hole that I later cut out a little bigger and nicer. Funny experience though!

If I suspect there will be a need to mic my bass drum I bring a kit with a ported head and an Evans EQ pillow along and do whatever I can to help the sound guy feel comfortable. They will do whatever they can to make you sound good if they like you.
