What a find! 1939-1941 Radio Kings! Last viewed: 27 minutes ago

I managed to track someone down who had an old snare for sale in a city about an hour and a half from my home, and I thought they had put pictures of an old Radio King up, but the pictures were so dark that I had to go and look for myself. I thought they didn't know what they had, and I was right!

I took the trip, and found myself looking at a 1939-1941 Hollywood Ace Radio King in completely original condition (except for the heads). The drum was in the round, the muffler still in great working order, and except for some rust, the throwoff worked like a charm! The WMP is a little yellowed, but only to the point to give it a nice patina, as well as a bit of that historical look. I threw on some new heads and it sounds great! I am keeping the original lugs, but they're brittle, so I replaced them with replicas for safe tuning. I got the drum for $300.

Apparently they were the guy's brother-in-law's, and when he died, their mother had put them in the attic. She threw out the bass drum (D'oh!), but still had the two Radio King toms with streamlined "cigar" lugs, 12" and 13", complete with bass hoop mounts, and a 1950-1954 Leedy and Ludwig 16" floor tom! The two toms were missing the tacked bottom heads, but otherwise were in fantastic shape! The floor tom was in the best shape of them all, complete with intact tacked drum head still in great shape! Along with various stands, I tried to help appraise them for the guy, but he ended up just saying that I could have the toms and stands for free!!! As I was driving away, I lost my voice screaming at the deal I had just gotten!

I don't have any pics of the toms, but I do of the snare! Hope you enjoy! I'll try to get some pics of the toms up, but I want to re-tack them first. Oh, and get the bass drum haha

Welcome to VDF!

I would have been horse from screaming too! Great score. Glad they went to somebody who can appreciate what they are. Those tubs will clean up beautifully.

Great score, man! Radio King bass drums in WMP wrap show up on eBay all the time, so you should be able to pick one up for a relatively decent price and put a kit together. Best of luck.

Thank you for the welcome!

I try to do my best restoring old drums as I get them, but this one is one that I'm going to leave as it is.

I've done a lot to old drums to get them back up to snuff, but the re-tacking will be a first for me. But I'm sure I can find the advice I need from all of the excellent members here. I've read the forum for a long time, but finally decided to post :)

that's a beauty! Well done. Shame the bass drum got chucked but at least you saved the rest. Good for the seller, too - they get $300 for something they thought was worthless and you get a cheap RK. Everybody's happy.
