what are these ludwigs? Last viewed: 21 minutes ago

hello everybody,

first off let me say i have been playing percussion for over 20yrs and i have never owned a ludwig set so im sorry for that i do how ever have some dw's and a keller maple kit that i have made using a donor kit.

so with that said i was out side sanding on a 8" keller maple snare shell for refinishing and my smokin hot neighbor comes over and says she would like for me to look at her old kit that she had back in high school. she would like for me to spruce it up a bit so that she may donate it to the church. i told her until we can determine if these are worth restoring i wouldnt do anything to them. for all we know they could be a great set for a collector or a whatever and that if they are worth something then she could sell them and then buy a cheap newer set for the church... well sorry for the story but here is the pics of what i found.. the 12 inch tom has a black and white badge so that means from the rockers era but the 13" 16" snare and bass are older but no badges? the 13 and snare are single lugs meaning the top tension rod mounts into the same lug as the bottom tension rod and the 12 is not that way... the 12 has a white interior and no re-rings and the rest of the set has black interior with massive re-rings ?

is this thing a mutt or what?

well help me out guys cause i have no clue!

thanks

chris

Hi Chris,Your bass drum and the mounted tom--13''-- are ludwig "Club date'' drums from the 60s.your 12" tom 80s rockers, your snare drum also 60s ludwig but the floor tom is a M.I.J.--made in japan--copy of a pearl the reason why the bass, toms and snare have no badges is these drumsa have been re-covered wrong grommets-air hole--grommet should be brass--iam guessing but is the bass drum drilled for a pearl type of double tom mount the 13" tom has been..I would say as a player set you should fix it up it looks like you have all the parts but if you were going to fix it up and resell it you would not be able to get much for the set do to the fact that its been re-covered and the added tom mounts...Oh Welcome stick around on this great forum..Mikey

I think those would make a nice church set-pick up some rims, heads, rods from Drummaker and go at it!My church set is MIT-Luddies are nicer.

lets not forget the snare is a "jazz festival" and very desirable. the snare alone will fetch at least 300 dollars maybe more. red sparkle is hot. that is of course if it is unmolested. and it appears the badge is no longer on the drum so who knows.

The snare has no badge so that takes the value down a bit from your ambitious $300 price--looks to be nickle hardware on it, though, and a p-83 throwoff, so it may well be pre-64--possibly had a pre-serial Ludwig badge which are obtainable. . Hard to tell what brand (whether it is a Ludwig or not) the floor tom is, the lugs from the picture appear to be the 70s/80s Pearl design and they could be a made-in-Taiwan off-brand.

The bass drum appears to be a Ludwig Club Date drum, and the only truly un-molested (completely original) drum is that Black/White badge Ludwig standard drum which is not worth a whole bunch. The other tom appears to have Club date lugs on it but it may or may not be a club date. The 3 Ludwigs, the non-badged rack tom, the snare, and the bass, may be originally of a set, but the rack tom has drills in it and they appear to have been painted on the interiors.

Although there's definitely some parts value there, simply opportunistically grabbing them from the hottie may not be in her best interests. On the other hand, you could clean them up for her and maybe even strike a conversation with her while you're getting them up to "church level." If you're still interested in them as an investment you would certainly have earned enough trust to ask to have 1st option on them or throw in the selling for another cheap set option into the mix.. Who knows, that church may not even need any drums, and if they don't then you could offer something for them and then she could donate the cash or do whatever.

This being a project set, though, not complete, drills in one of the toms, no badges on the older drums, total cash value isn't going to be that great.
