What brand of drum is this? Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Hello,

I got this bass drum along with three Slingerland cut away concert toms plus a floor tom .

It was dusty and the heads were shot but i cleaned it up.

There are no badges on it and it looks like the grommet has been removed or never had one.

the pics are in reverse but as you can see it was pretty dirty.

thanks for any help on this.

Ummm no: as in, literally: Made In Japan. Abbreviated as MIJ (yea, it threw me the first time I saw it). There were a lot of Japanese instrument companies that made 'knock-offs' of famous American drums for import back in the day; this appears to be a Rogers copy (I say copy, loosely, because they are considered to be a cheap knock-off of the original, right down to lugs that are reminiscent of the original, as these are). I've had a couple of kits like this come in and out the door (Yamaha used to make stuff like this; another company was Coronet) and they are always made of luan wood, a.k.a. "philippine mahogany", or worse. Very pithy, cheap stuff; however, drums like this can be made to sound pretty good with some work on the edges, decent heads, etc.

On this drum, much of the hardware is identical to the last MIJ set I had, including the metal hoops and the tension rods (which I saved when I junked the drums: never let them near water!!!!!!). The lugs are different: mine looked like Slingerland (I saved 'em, just in case). If the drum plays well, who cares who made it? I think I read somewhere that luan wood drum shells benefit from a coat of lacquer or shellac to seal their interiors. Tell us what the interior of the drum looks like, and how they sound when you play them...

Those lugs are generic any more, but were used a lot by Pearl on their off branded stuff. The date someone said, the '70's, is right.

The rack tom holder is pure MIJ.

No badges? MIJ's don't need any stinking badges (but it's nice when they have 'em).

Make up a name and have some plastic stick on badges made, or go 'badgeless'.

The cool thing about MIJ's is that with a bit of care, you can make 'em sound good. Will they ever sound like high end, quality drums? Nope, but they will sound good enough to gig with. There's a number of folks on the forum that do, too.

Oh yeah, welcome to the 'place' where the good folks hang out.
