What can a serial number tell me?? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Hello Skin Beaters,

I just picked up some Slingerland drums and I'm trying to find a floor tom to match the set.

What I have is a floor bass, 2 toms mounted to the bass, and a chrome Slingerland snare.

I am told the finish is oyster pearl, but so far on line, I'm thinking they are white marine pearl. That said, there is a floor tom on ebay right now that would match if it IS marine.

So I am wondering if the serial number will indicate the drum's finish/color etc.

I am told they are from circa 1968.

I don't have photos right now; can have tomorrow though.

The serial numbers are as follows: snare: 344328

bass" 371321

tom 371311

tom 344323

I also have the original Slingerland bass pedal.

many thanks,

Puff

Guru,

Thanks for the welcome.

Since posting the message, I have been utilizing this site's great resources to get a handle on the serial number, finish, age, etc.

I think the seller was mistaken (hopefully innocently) about the supposed age of the drums. While I don't have a badge to look at right now, I used the graph to get a range of the possible age of these drums.

Seeing how all the serial numbers are in the 300,000 range, it looks like these drums are from the 70's, not the 60's.

It also looks like the finish is marine. Is that a sought after finish?

I can return these drums to the seller since I bought them based on his info, and I would have no problem doing so.

I offered $150 for the bass ( 22"?) , 2 toms (12, 13 approx) and a chrome slingerland snare with stand. Plus the vintage floor pedal.

All skins are original, the bass has logos on both sides. The interiors of the drums appear to be natural finsih, and look maple, and are pristine. No cracks, discoloration or fading/yellowing in the finish.

There is some pitting on the chrome, but I am confident I can polish it out...

The seller claims he sold the floor tom for over $400 on ebay... Which I find hard to believe.

I'd be open to any thoughts, criticisms or ideas from you guys.

thanks,

Puff
