What can you tell me about these camcos? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster here. I was recently gifted a set of really lovely camcos by a friend who's father passed away and left them to her. She doesn't play so she gave them to me. They are walnut (i think?) with gold hardware. Sizes are 24, 18, 15, 14. No snare. I haven't been using the 14 as i prefer to play a 4 piece and it doesn't have a bottom hoop anyway. They are somewhat partied on but not in terrible shape. I plan to do a resto eventually but am gigging them as is for now. I re-skinned them when i got them a few months ago. Anyway at some point during their stay in a punk house basement some clever jerk pried all the badges off so I have no idea if these are oaklawn, LA, or what. http://i47.tinypic.com/2r7oriv.jpgThis is the only pic i could find right now although i have a couple others somewhere. The 14" tom is not pictured. Snare is a gretsch rb. My main thing is, i am currently mounting my rack tom on a snare stand, which is fine for now but i want to use both eventually. I have the stock bar for mounting two toms but it's dodgy at best, i think some of the screws are stripped. I want to mount the toms on my cymbal stands but use the existing mounts on the drums. Also thought about getting those DW lug mount iso things. Any thoughts? Questions? Any info you guys have would be super helpful. Thanks much.

Welcome!

They look super cool, but unfortunately, I know nothing about those, so I'll leave it to experts.

I not a Camco expert, but gold plated lugs would seem to me be either custom done or they're really DW lugs. I don't know if Camco back in the day was a large enough type of company to do gold plating, but as I said, I'm no expert.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Measure the thickness of the shells & the number of plies (this could possibly help identify the period it was made). Keeping the tom in a snare basket isn't a bad idea (I do this even when I have a bass mounting system, & feel the toms & bass sound better). If the tom is large, & sits too high , I cut down one of my old Ludwig/ WFL snare stands. (it's also a cheaper way to achieve isolation). I don't believe Camco & DW lugs were interchangeable. To see if someone switched lugs, look inside for extra holes, or elongated holes,(you may have to remove a lug)

Its look like all hardware is original Camco .

Exept that floortom hoop, on reso side - seems not to be original.

Realy pitty that badges are removed.

But, let us ty to identificate them:

-Chek out if its 6 plys, and messure thicknes, as already suggesed. If thet are 6 ply - its 80-90 % that L.A. , but ther was even few late Chanute, 6 ply.

- Sizes are typical for 70.s.

90 %L.A. era, 10% for (late) Chanute era.

-Finnish is called Stravidarius. Not niceset av them all. Especially not how they look at the moment. Hmmmm

I am NOT for shure here, but I THINK, thats Stravidarius finnish was avaible only at L.A. era . So let us say 95% chance for LA, and 5 for Chanute.

By the way, here is Another Stradivarius Camco , L.A. pic:

Thats same finish.

And according to Vintage Snare Website, catalog from L.A. period:

-There was gold plated luggs too, as chrome, on at least L.A, era.

(I am not shure how it is with gold hardware on Chanute and/or Oaklawn era- but I can not remmber that I sew/heard about it). So loet me guess 80-90% chance for L.A. again.

Your lugs, unforantly is NOT look to be in nice shape :-(

When I put together all - I get them to probably be 90% L.A. Camco built between 73 och 77/78.

But If soemone can determinate if there was NOT gold hardware, or NO Stravidarius finsih on Chanute sets, then there is no more doubt about it - then they are 100% L.A.

I don't believe Camco & DW lugs were interchangeable.

Thet are "interchangeble" ( new word for me Help2 - good with forums- I learn some new words every day)

I had a DW toms that I put some Camco Oaklawn lugs on, with original old screws. No problems at all.So IT could be changed at some point. But I should guess thet are original.

I should get ordinary rims and hang them on cymbalstand , as you said.

Or, If you have money, and want to "modern look, get 2 DW:s tomount rims for cymbalstand.

Then you are not destroying anything, have a solution how to mount toms.

I use ordinary rims on my L.A. Camco. Works fine.

But, that 15" tom IS HEAVY, so do not buye too week cymbalclamp.

Are they for sale, maybe?

Based on the sizes, finish and plating I would say 90% certain they are Los Angeles Camcos.

Those are LA Stradivarius, I'm almost positive by 99.9%. I have a matching snare for your kit. Do the badges face the drummer when the 14 & 15 are mounted over the bass drum?

Looking at a catalog sent to me by a fellow member I see the Stradivarius finish in the '70's like youse guys already said. The only mention of hardware finish shows chrome plating. Not a word about Gold or brass.

Believe it or else!

Camco catalog was not something they was put huge money on...

I see several ( Picutres - not live) gold plated hardware on Camcos. Not in any catalog.

If I remember right, just on L.A. era.

Here's my snare drum. Gold was an option for LA Camco. I also have a 10" tom not listed anywhere in the catalog.
