What color is my Ludwig? Last viewed: 9 hours ago

This is my WFL Porto pak snare. I've alway assumed this was a gold sparkle drum, but it doesn't look likemy other gold sparkle 60's snare. The color is more pale compared to 60's gold and the flakes look more like a glass glitter than a sparkle. So was this just the old gold sparkle or something else?

I believe your wrap was called "Gold Flash Pearl" and is a glass glitter finish. Yes, it is definitely a different shade of gold from what would be used in the 60's when Ludwig switched to regular sparkle (confetti) wraps.

Thanks! I don't see Gold Flash Pearl on the color list on pg 150 in the Ludwig Book, but gold sparkle started in 1929 so maybe this falls under the early gold sparkle?

This is Gold Sparkle. The brown spots are common, & nothing I know of can be done about them. (informally some drummers call this "Old Gold", to distinguish the old formula, the ginger ale quality of it's aging color, & the brown spotting).

This color is shown in the 1953 WFL catalog... http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/finishes/wfl/53_wfl_large.jpg but not in the 1956 catalog. By 1960, Ludwig was using confetti sparkle wraps.

I still feel that the color is Gold Flash. Let's see what others have to say!

Seems WFL was not consistent w/ their names. In the 1939 catalog they called this finish "Sparkling Gold". In 1941 it was "Gold Sparkling Pearl". ...& in the 1953 catalog The page heading is "Sparkling Pearl Finishes', yet, in their list of sparkle finishes , they call it Gold Flash.

Gold Flash usually was a "broken glass" sparkle. The wrap has bits of broken glass in it, giving it that great looking sparkle. Ludwig and Ludwig called their 30's sparkles Gold Flash.

I'm not aware of WFL ever calling their sparkle "Gold Flash". I could be wrong on that.

FWIW, I had some WW2 internal tuning WFL's with the same "broken glass" sparkle.

For WFL the "confetti" sparkle or glitter sparkle replaced the "broken glass" sparkle sometime between the late 40's and mid 50's I think.

Your drum looks great!
