From Rich K.

I too think it's that uncataloged "charcoal" satin flame of which I've seen a few.Maybe it's yet another uncataloged finish. The pattern of the satin flame looks like the original and not anything that was available for re-wraps.In the Slingerland catalog the blue satin flame shown on the Joe Cusatis set is a much darker blue than all the blue satin flame drums I've seen. Anyone ever see a dark blue like this?http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/catalogs/slingerland/1969_slingerland_4.jpg

As a matter of fact I saw a dark blue satin early 60's Slingy kit at GC yeaterday. It wasn't as dark as the floor Tom in question but was as dark as the kit in the catalogue.

Well.. Maybe you could post a pic of the charcoal wrap.. does it also have shades of Blue?

( if, the Ebay tom was cleaned and placed in the sunlight it would appear lighter in colour and more resemble the Blue kit pictured).. the catalogue pic is a scan and appears darker than the actual kits did..

Cheers

This type of wrap appears to have been made by one company. The drum companies, that I know for sure , that used it, were; Gretsch,Slingerland,Sonor,Trixon,Camco and Ludwig. There may have been others. Every time a company makes a wrap, they have a name for it. In this case, it was possibly Moire, because both Camco and Trixon used that name and it would seem odd, for that to be the case, if the maker didn't have that pet name for it. Slingerland used Satin Pearl and Sonor used Super Multi Brilliant,Gretsch used Flame and Ludwig used Astro but it was the same stuff.

It was likely made by Delmar and each company had their chosen colours but even they were catalogued with proprietary names. At Sonor, it was Gold Ripple but Slingerland called it Gold Satin Pearl; at Gretsch, Gold Flame; at Trixon, Yellow Moire;Camco,Gold Moire; Ludwig, Gold Astro.

Slingerland had 7 colours catalogued but there were at least 3 others that other companies offered and would have been available to Slingerland as a custom order or could have arrived by accident in a shipment. ------Lets say, Slingerland receives an 18 wheeler load of wrap and someone in the shipping dept. at the maker, accidentally sends 8 sheets of what Gretsch called Moonglow and Sonor called Charcoal Silver. What are they going to do with them, send them back? Or,( Delmar?) sends them a few sheets gratis, hoping to get them to include the colour in the next catalogue, or as samples, or Slingerland orders a few to have on hand, knowing that eventually someone will walk into a dealer and say : can I get this kit wrapped in Grey, like Gretsch has. Sometimes , the colour is more important than the drums.

The wrap was available, they had it on hand or could include a few sheets in the next order and it got used. I think most drum companies did custom orders.

Wow!! I didn't realize the controversy I would create with this! As stated in a previous post, it's always good to "agree to disagree", which is what makes this forum fun and educational.

Concerning the shade of blue in the catalog pic, I, too, have that catalog and also have to believe that lighting plays a major role in the color. I also know, as do most of us, that colors can, and do, change from batch to batch. My Cusatis kit was photographed in sunlight, but the color is fairly true to how it looked inside as well.

Still, I do feel that this floor tom in question is closer to a Charcoal shade than a Blue shade. I also think it will be next to impossible to match it to anyone's existing kit. Based on that, I really feel that the asking price is way to high! Just my :2Cents:

I'll make this my last post on this thread, The Ebay tom is Blue Satin Flame.

I do not base my opinion on looking at catalogues and pictures, I base it on the experience of being there at the time and waking up next to the kit at your bedside. Playing & hauling it up and down the east coast coast of Oz for four years under all types of lighting conditions. My knowledge is also based on being one of only two drummers, employed by the Oz Slingerland distributor between the late 60's to mid 70's. As the stock controller, I was involved with the selection of which kits and colours made it to our sunny shores. So I do believe that this period and the subject in question is well within my expertise. What to many here may be considered hearsay, to me is the obvious.

I see so much confusion around these colours (The Satin Flames), look around with Google and you'll see (Blue as example), Aqua referred to as Blue, Blue Satin Pearl referred to as Blue Satin Flame, All of the other Brands of Blue Satin Flame none of which look like the Slingerland version IMO. And now we have Blue Satin Flame referred to as Charcoal??? , Charcoal is predominately a mix of Black and Grey (or as in US) Gray. It has no Hint of Blue in it...

(Blue Satin Flame and Blue Satin Pearl are quite different, same colours but different pattern)

Cheers

and another special Cheer for the new "Pommie Prince"

longjohn!

I completely agree that it's time to lay this to rest. I also greatly appreciate your past history and expertise with all things Slingerland. Should I ever visit your neck of the woods, I've no doubt we'd have allot of fun together, hanging out and talking vintage drums!

To me, the bottom line with this floor tom is that, as a single piece, there may not be anyone out there that can use it. As such, it's price way too high. But, I've seen stranger things sell on the Bay!

By the way, the manufacturer of that wrap is Rowland Industries and the actual product is referred to as Rowlux Illusion Film.

http://www.rowtec.com/rowlux.html

I have used it extensively in manufacturing of various pieces of scenery and stage equipment. It's pretty cool stuff. It was used behind the transporter bay in the original Star Trek series and every aquatic store used to carry it for aquarium backings.
