What is this .... Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Sir, I would not pay $60.00 for that one.

It is all very flimsy IMHO.

I know, I started out on a snare like this.

It will break and i would not want to depend on it for a gig.

You can get an Acrolite for $100-$140 and it will last forever.

BUT....if you are an MIJ collector, It might be great.

My 2 cents.

They were attached to it with zip ties to prevent theft at this pawn shop. Not part of the drum.

Ah, I was going to say it was a very strange thing to do to a snare, but that makes sense.

I fully agree with GGD

I have one in my collection that is a Star brand and identical to this drum. I paid $30 for it. Definitely not a gigging drum as they do not really hold tension and with the vertical ply tend to go out of round. The hardware will crack if put under a lot of tension, I have had to replace several on snares of the MIJ drums. One of the good things about the drum is the wrap, Blue Onyx. I believe it was a knock off to the Slingerland Agate and the Rogers Onyx wraps. I picked mine up only due to the wrap color for my MIJ collection.

No Guru - I just love collecting & learning about vintage drums!

Some of my favorites from the kits in the collection
58 WFL New Yorker Blue Sparkle
67 Ludwig Hollywood Red Psychedelic
69 Ludwig Standard Red Ruby Strata
70's Ludwig BOP "Ringo" Kit

A few of my favorite snares
20's Leedy Black Elite
51 Leedy & Ludwig Knob Tension
58 WFL Buddy Rich Classic Blue Sparkle
63 Walberg & Auge Sea Blue Agave Green Pearl
66 Leedy Shelly Manne Blue Agate Pearl

Yep, this is a Star brand MIJ Slingerland stencil snare. I'm nearly done restoring one in blue sparkle, very similar to the one pictured in the OP. This one appears to be a six-lug snare, whereas mine has eight lugs, no reinforcement inside the shell where the strainer is mounted, and has (or had, it was removed) a baseball bat muffler instead of the twisty knob. It looks really nice after the restoration, but it's easily the worst sounding snare I own. It was part of a matching 4-piece MIJ set that I bought for $125.

I paid $60 (including shipping) for another very similar MIJ six-lug snare, which is more than it was worth, but I needed the strainer for the blue sparkle one (same strainer in your photos). It was the cheapest I could find at the time on ebay.

Speaking of the strainer, something looks odd about the one pictured. Looks like the knob is too far out, and/or the hole for it may be damaged? Hard to tell.
