What pieces of each brand's parts would your ideal vintage drum set have on it? Last viewed: 6 minutes ago

Most would agree there's no vintage brand that got everything right, so what would a kit look like if you took the best parts of every brand and assembled something? No modern stuff allowed, that means no R.I.M.S. mounts!

Mine would include:

Gretsch Jasper shells and bearing edge profiles, 8x12, 14x14, 16x16, 14x20 and 5x14 snare

Gretsch 60's tensioning butt plate for added flexibility

Gretsch die cast rims

Gretsch tension rods on toms and snare

Sonor teardrop lugs, offset on the toms of course

Rogers tom mufflers but with Gretsch knobs

Premier 60's bass drum claws (super low mass)

Slingerland 60's snare strainer (tiny and super smooth)

Camco t-rods on kick drum

Camco floor tom leg brackets and cymbal arm bracket on kick

Ludwig long floor tom legs

Ludwig cymbal arm

Zickos kick spurs and brackets

I use modern stands and pedals, but if I were to go full vintage I'd use:

Ludwig flat base cymbal stands

Ludwig 60's tripod light hi-hat stand (with a metal cam replacing the plastic one)

Camco kick pedal

Ludwig canister throne

Sonor snare stands for snare and rack tom

One day I might build this kit, if money is suddenly no object. What's on your ideal kit?

Interesting thread .. For me it would be a 60's Ludwig Super Classic, 22-13-16,with all original tom and floor tom mount brackets, with 70's mufflers for toms, Ludwig canister throne, a Gretsch interior muffler for bass drum on reso side, Rogers for tom mount,(like Bonzo and Ringo) Rogers snare drum stand, original Camco bass drum pedal with strap drive, Camco floor tom legs with notches, and that's about it for me.. Even though that isn't much, it would still be the ideal vintage set up for me..

Mid 1960's Slingerland shells

Slingerland Stick Saver snare and tom hoops (brass)

Rogers Swivomatic tom mounting hardware and floor tom legs

Slingerland/Leedy Shelly Manne snare strainer and butt

Leedy Deco lugs

Leedy faucet handle bass drum tension rods

Walberg & Auge internal tone controls on all drums including bass drum

Rogers Swivomatic bass drum pedal

Rogers disappearing Swivomatic spurs for bss drum

Wooden bass drum hoops with matching wrap in 1/2" channel

Rogers Swivomatic Hihat

Rogers Swan Leg cymbal stands

60's Camco flat base snare stand

Oh yeah.......................a canister throne to match the wrap of the drums. It would probably need to be special ordererd with 14" diameter, have a heavily padded seat, and made to be of a height suitable for my short stature. The custom made canister that I use has those features, and is 3-4 inches shorter than the standard height that most manufacturers build.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

My needs are simple... and I already have much of it..

1/Three ply shells & rings... (including snare) Slingerland or Ludwig...

2/Brass Slingerland stick saver rims for snare & toms.. a must for me

3/Wooden BD hoops..

4/Elegant & forward angled disappearing spurs, Slingerland, Trixon etc.

(Always preferred that look and simplicity)

5/Gretsch tom mounting system (12.7 Catalina style).

6/Premier Lokfast Cymbal stands/hardware.

7/ Solid build chain drive pedals with spares support/backup, probably Pearl or Tama..

Cheers

John

Interesting topic. I've had a Franken snare drum in mind for some time. A mix of Radio King and Dynasonic. A whole kit will take a bit more thought. But for sure would include some of those green glass concert toms! If I had my way back in the 70's my Slingerland kit would have had all Rogers swivo hardware. Frank Ippolito couldn't get Rogers to supply him bare shells and loose hardware like the other vendors would. Camco was the next best thing.

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.
