What's my Slingerland bop kit worth? Last viewed: 1 day ago

Shipping isnt too difficult if you nest the drums inside of one another like nesting dolls. The whole kit could fit in one, not too large box.

Craigslist is your best route. Ask $650 and go as low as $500. The bass drum is the desirable piece but it has extra holes. Nice sounding drums but little to no collector value. Just a vintage players kit. Good luck. Too bad you're not in Chicago.

Confused- if I ebay it I have to be willing to ship it don't I? I have no idea how to ship a drumset, and my friend at a shipping store says it would probably cost more than the set itself if I had them do it.Also just to verify - you're saying sell base drum, floor tom, mounted tom, mounted tom's key, cases for toms, and maybe kick pedal (but NOT cymbals & throne) as a package deal, right? Boston. Know of any seller's resources here? All I can think of is craigslist, and possibly freecycle.

Yes, sell the drums (the 3 of them) as a group, stands and pedals individually, cases seperate and cymbals. You'll get the most for your money.

Boston is too far from California to give you a hand.....

Shipping a small drum set like the Jet is not difficult, it may involve some time and money, but it's fairly easy. I don't see why you cant fit the 3 drums inside a box 20x20x20. You can find boxes at storage facilities or Uhaul.

PM me and I'll give you some of my secrets to eBay and shipping.....and it's spelled bass drum, not base drum. ;)

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I'm in Cambridge daily for work and live in Newbury MA. I'm looking for a Slingerland kit with the smaller sizes you have. Looks as if I could do $1200-$1500 or so depending on what I see up close. Others may offer more, but I am really looking for a later version with the set-o-matic tom holder. The rail mounts are a bit of a pain to use.

You can call me tomorrow on cell at 617-594-1850. email too at [email protected]

In any event, shipping is relatively easy and if my offer isn't acceptable or when I see the set it doesn't work for me, I can show you how to ship and probably even get you some boxes. Fedex and UPS will pick it up from you and you can do everything on line.

Best,

Dan

You'll have to remove the lugs from the ride tom to fit it inside the floor tom.

Very good idea; hadn't thought of that.

From backbeatkeeper

it's spelled bass drum, not base drum.

Good catch, and I used to know that! Then too many people "informed" me that bass means a fish so I should be saying base, a foundation like low notes in a song. Eventually I reluctantly decided that bass must be the European and classical spelling and base the modern American spelling. Glad to hear I'm wrong about that!

Thanks for the tip! I once tried to nest them for storage purposes and discovered they didn't fit. Didn't think of removing the lugs.

Found some pics of similar kits. Notice the 4-bolt rail mount on the first one; that must be what was on mine previously. The second one sold for like $2500 a few years back... that seems overpriced to me. They all seem to have wooden bass drum rims.

The kit sold for $800, which I think is the right price given the following pros and cons...

PROS:

Chrome in good condition.

Smooth bearing edges.

Probably the original finish, as the shells have an "M" stamped on the inside. Apparently Slingerland used to designate shells due for a wrap with "P" (for Pearl) and those due to be stained, laquered, or painted with "M" (possibly for Maple or Mahogany). The wrapped kits were worth a bit more originally. Occasionally both M and P will be stamped on the inside, which usually meant Slingerland intended the shell for an unwraped kit but then wrapped them even so. Anyway mine all just said M.

Probably the original wooden hoops- As I mentioned there are pictures of similar wood hooped Slingerlands.

Probably only one extra hole (still a big issue but slightly better than having 5 extra!) Basing this on pictures I found of similar kits having a four-bolt rail mount that corresponds with my mystery holes.

CONS:

The finish on the mounted tom has a reasonably deep gouge in it, which means refinishing absolutely perfectly would be impossible.

The extra hole and the 2-bolt replacement rail mount.

So that's it. 27 years under my care and now it's on to somebody else. I'm glad to see it lives on...

I extend many thanks to all those who responded- this site has been very helpful!
