I'm far from the expert but it looks like a MIJ drum with the luan interior and throw off.

Yes looks like a MIJ snare. The hoops look like die cast to me not brass. If so, I'm guessing a previous owner added those.

Those rims are original. What I don't know is what brand this drum is. Star, Pearl or "other". I had a drum like this along time ago. It had large diameter tension rods and those same cast rims which someone had over tightened, causing the ears to bend over a little. I may even have a few of those lugs.

I've seen that type of throw off on many of MIJ snare drums. The brand is anybody's guess.

How often do we see die cast hoops on MIJ's?

Mine never had them.

Were they common?

Also, that muffler knob does not look like MIJ to me.

The MIJ Experts will chime in.

I have an MIJ snare with the same die cast hoops. Mine did not have a badge when I received it but I did see one on eBay with (again) the same hoops and that one had a SAKAE badge. Sakae was the supplier of drums to Yamaha for many years and they now have their own line of drums.
