What's the Proper Muffler & Strainer for my WFL Snare? Last viewed: 23 hours ago

Hi oh knowledgeable ones...

I bought this WFL snare, 6 1/2 x 14 mahogany and maple?, several months back and LOVE the fat, dirty sound I get from it. I know the strainer and muffler aren't original, but am not sure what would be. I'm also not sure if the original hardware would improve the performance of the drum or just give it that original look.

Besides the badge's '48-'52 use, is there a way to date this drum more specifically? Was natural wood a standard finish or has it been re-done?

Thanks for any input anyone might have.

Hi ,You have the right strainer on the drum but it is a newer one -{P-85}-from the late 1970-90's..The one that was on the drum new was a P-83 strainer..The muffler is wrong for the drum its not even a Ludwig-{W.F.L.] one its a Tama muffler that soneone added to the drum.The right muffler would have a round pad black felt with a small knob on the out side of the drum.Are their any extra holes on the shell?...Mikey

The original strainer and muffler would probably reduce playability a bit, in that they were earlier designs and would be older hardware. If the drum's a player I'd probably leave it as is.

Thanks for the input. There are 3 extra, small, holes under the strainer with what looks like a metal threading insert in each. Are these perhaps from the original strainer?

If I wanted to re-wrap this, where could I find some cool, vintage looking wraps in snare-size quantities? I've only seen wrap lots for entire kits.

Is there any way to more closely date this drum without a date stamp inside?

Ok. The Tama muffler is actually really functional...much more than the simple knob style on my 80's slingerland. It's just not really attractive flower.
