What's with the insane asking prices on Reverb? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

From Hobbs

Why do you prefer it? Curious as I might be encouraged to buy there.FWIW: I find sold Reverb listings by googling item x and then looking at the PHOTO section that indicate Reverb and click through until I get to their site.

The downside with that route is that you also find older listings that haven't sold (but ended or have been deleted by the staff because of a pressing reason)

Besides that its dedicated to musical products (and everything that comes with it, such as reviews, rig rundowns and much more) Its the ease of use for me. But also the open system (you can't delete messages so there is always a log of what has been said for instance) , probably because of that the more serious sellers/buyers/interestee and more.

I don't know about you guys, but I always look at what an item actually sold for to determine a fair price. Just because a seller ask for more than it's worth doesn't inflate prices on other items. I mean, who really cares, maybe it's the old, ''yes honey, I did put the drums up for sale, but no one is buying them.''

I think these people believe they struck gold with some of these kits, especially the ones owned by famous players, like the Carmine Appice kit for 10 G’s that worth about $1800. I prefer to shop on Craigslist!

When it comes to vintage sets that were/are common -such as the Ludwig Super Classic configuration, then condition is everything. Any alteration or damage is going to devalue such a kit, greatly. And, unfortunately, most kits that are on the market, these days, have some issues. So, the current selling prices are reflective of what's still out there.

Every now and then, a "wrench" gets thrown into the gears of the market, when a really exceptional kit turns up -something in pristine, all-original condition, etc. IF the seller knows what they have and if it happens to be something the market is hungry for, then the seller can ask the moon and stars as far as pricing goes.

There are collectors out there with plenty of money to spend on such items and will do so without hesitation. That's why you see Gretsch bop kits going for $10K....It's because they have the sound, they are rare and that's what the people, with the money to spend, want. When the demand exceeds the supply, then pricing can be anything...There is no "fair market value" for such things....more like "the sky's the limit"!
