Well, I'm new to Camco, but it looks to me like in addition to the muffler knob that's missing, it seems that those holes where the missing strainer should be don't seem to match up to any Camco strainer.
BTW - I have an 8-lug Studio model in need of a top hoop. Do you know of a source for those other than waiting for one to show on eBay?
For starters, the hoops are wrong for that era of Camco production. The shell and edges don't look quite right to me. Plus, I think white paint on the shell interior was discontinued by the time oval badge drums were being produced. Old stock, I don't think so.
You're right about the hoops with that badge but it's actually the badge that's wrong on that drum. By the time of the oval badge the tone control was to the left of the badge when looking at the drum, not to the right like this one. The grommet should be brass colored as well. White paint was on the interior of wrapped drums right on thru the Chanute era. As far as a source for Camco COB hoops watch EBay or check locally. I bought a Ludwig Clubdate kit last year and it wasn't until I went to change the heads on the floor Tom that I discovered one of the hoops was a COB 14"-6 hole George Way. So you never know where they maybe hiding.

You should contact the seller, and ask him to explain himself. Of course, he won't make that public, but it's a shame someone might buy this drum under false pretenses. I'm dying to get my hands on a good Oaklawn Aristocrat snare, but inevitably when they turn up, there's always something dodgy about them. Guitar Center is selling one right now that's a beautiful BDP, but it's got a generic strainer and extra holes.
Thanks for the history lesson.
Stephen
I doubt the seller even knows, most people don't. I know thru years of comparing snares in original condition and even then the occasional odd one will show up that makes no sense. The problem also lies with the fact that the drum would then be missing a badge and trying find a winged Oaklawn badge becomes expensive and hard to find. But this is also why I post these things on an open forum to help educate the possible new owner on what to look for in the future if one wants to bring the drum back to original. I also have to look at all the extra holes and missing parts on this drum, the damage has already been done!

I also like to post on open forums (as I did on the other forum where you posted this same thing) that oddball drums were much more commonly shipped from various manufacturers' factories than we enthusiasts or the "experts" generally think about. Being a manufacturer's rep for a large company gives a person a lot of exposure to oddball pieces of current models as well as for past models. . When some components were out of stock, or in crunch times where the demand surpassed the supply, many running changes to the specs were intentionally made. Just about any price list or catalog notes that variances to specs or prices printed on these pages may take place withou prior notice.
That's very true. I've seen some odd stuff over the years that were factory made. This drum is not one of them! The grommet is not factory.

That's easy, the ITC is on the wrong side for the oval badge era, it should be on the other side. Also the grommet should be the same brass style Ludwig used on the 3ply drum shells.
