When di Ludwig change their WMP pattern in the 70s? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I have a project kit I'm working on and based on the serial numbers its around a 1976 Hollywood or Big Beat (22/12/13/16) in WMP. Unfortunately the bass drum shell is toast due to a very heavy person using it as a trampoline at some point. So I sourced a replacement which appears to be from 78/79, 3ply, pointy badge etc but when it showed up it looks like a later version of the wrap. I had assumed the wrap changed when they went to the later 6 ply shells. So when did they change?

As for this kit, well, it's a bit of an animal so a non matching bass drum will have to do.

I was always lead to believe that ludwig changed their beautiful ' 60's ' style wmp pattern to the more diamond pattern (which I hate) around 1972/73.

My WMP Ludwig sets I used from 1980-84 had the horizontal linear pattern and not the "diamond" pattern ( ala BDP).

I've looked on the net, and apparently ludwig changed their wmp to the linear style with a diamond cut affect around 1975.

Thanks for that. So if the new wrap was introduced in 75 then this kit was a transition kit as the serial numbers (all 123xxxx) puts it a bit after 75. The thing is I can't remember seeing a 3 ply kit with the later wrap before. I thought I was safe buying from this era that the wrap would be the prettier old pattern. You live and learn. Shipping bass drum shells half way around the world ain't cheap either.
