When did Ludwig end following wrap into ply's? Last viewed: 37 minutes ago

Morning all -

I'm wondering when Ludwig ended the practice of the wrap following the ply's when they formed the shells. I have a July '68 silver sparkle kit where the entirety of the wrap is glued to the outer shell. I'm fairly confident this was the way things were done at this point, but would like to be positive -

I believe they stopped in early 69.

I believe they stopped in early 69.

+1 here. According to the Ludwig book, they did this until 1969...although it's not entirely impossible that your kit from '68 has original wrap. There are always exceptions and one-offs with vintage Ludwig (and other drum companies back in the day). If it is a re-wrap, you would clearly see where the wrap went into the shell originally when looking at the bearing edge.

Thank you for the input -

Strange thing is (vintage drums seem often to have a certain strangeness to them; so why am I surprised?) the SS 12/13/16/22 are dated Jul 23 1968 & the wrap does not follow into the seams. I have an Aug 1 1968 SS Jazz Fest I picked up separately where the wrap DOES follow into the seam.

ive always thought the change was made towards mid-late 68.

So I'm thinking this gives credence to Mr. Layton's comment; or it obliterates it; or it further muddies the waters.

Another fun fact : the badge # on the snare is 2000 LOWER than the earlier dated 12/13/16/22.
