Which Wrap is Closest to Original? Last viewed: 14 minutes ago

I'm thinkin' of doing a re-wrap in either WMP or BDP; I have a Pioneer snare in each color, so I'm trying to match new wrap to my old snares. Which of these is closest to Ludwig's '60's versions? Anybody know? thanks.......marko

Marko - the bad news is; neither one! Both the modern WMP and the BDP use smaller chips in the formula. The new stuff has a much tighter pattern. I don't think anybody makes wraps that are identical to the vintage stuff anymore. There was a WMP that was pretty close, but they discontinued it awhile back.

Compare old/new for yourself. You'll see what I mean. If I had to choose, I'd say the BDP is probably a little closer visually than WMP. But both are different from the original.

John

PS - If I had some serious money... I'd contract with Delmar to recreate runs of vintage WMP, BDP, and Champaign sparkle. It would cost a small fortune, the smallest run they'll do is (thousands) of sheets, but I'd get rich quick selling it to drummers who want to put their 50/60 year old kits back in mint condition.

Too many great drums to list here!

Yes, the new BDP has a much smaller pattern. There's a Pacific set at Music-go-Round in Natick,MA with that wrap on it.

If you contact Precision Drum Co.,http://www.precisiondrum.com/html/body_wrap.html#howtoorderwrap

they will send you small square(approx.3X3) samples of the actual wraps upon request so that you can get the best match. It's impossible to get close by just viewing the samples on line. You will find that Purdie is right about the pattern and chip size and about BDP being easier to match up. The big problem with WMP is trying to match the natural fading and yellowing....I've gone through the process with both wraps. I wrapped a SD to match a '61 BDP Luddy kit and had a FT wrapped to match a '70's WMP Slingy kit. Save yourself some time and frustration and go with the BDP. Good luck!

Yep the WMP is difficult to match. I use Drum Foundrys "Cream Pearl" on a Slingy 13" tom. Small chip pattern and it's a tan color vs the yellow hue old WMP takes on. I then got some samples from Precision. The Antique white is a closer match as it has some of that yellow hue. I plan to redo the 13" and a 20" floor in it someday.

Pic..... DF Cream Pearl on the left. Precision AW top and Vintage white marine bottom. Get some samples and don't rely on viewing colors online.

Thanks, guys. I knew the wmp was pretty different, but wasn't sure about the BDP. I know the real old BDP was big chips, but wasn't sure how the new stuff matched up with '60's wrap. I guess I better send for a sample.

I've been looking for a BDP club date set for a while, & haven't found one I could afford or was happy with, condition-wise. I'm thinking I'd rather have a re-wrap than an expensive beat-up one, since I have most of the parts & pieces. I'd like it to match my snares, since I have a Pioneer, a JF, & a Classic, all in BDP.

Also lookin' for a nice WMP Club Date kit--they seem a bit more common, but seem to have issues. I wish I wasn't so picky, but I know I end up dissatisfied when I go for kits with extra holes, etc........marko

I.M.H.O. , WMP it´s allways hard to matched....... Much more than almost any other wraps due the variety of "yellowing"/"faded" etc etc

Ludwig '67 Classic B.D.P.
Ludwig '79 Classic Pro-beat
C. A. F. '72 New Sonic "The Argentinean Ludwig"
A bunch of Ludwig snares..... + Dyna & P.Tone.

and always trying to recover some orphan drums!!
