The plating was "Reliable". But did they also make the actual shells? Where were the spun seamless shells made? Were they manufactured BY Ludwig on Ludwig shell spinning machinery or were they jobbed out to another Chicago factory that was already tooled up for such operations?
Who fabricated Ludwig's shells? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

O-lugs, great question, I spent 2 1/2 hours with Dick Gerlach at the Ludwig Monroe NC. Plant the day he retired in 2000, and got to pick his brain about the #1 love to me of Ludwig Drums the Stainless Steel drums.
He was the top Honcho of the entire stainless steel program, starting from 1967 with the Marching drums up to the drum kits themselves up to the 80's.
He of course told me about the outsourcing of the Stainless steel and Vistalite drums, that they were simply beyond the capacity for Ludwig to manufacture these shells.
But I never got around to the steel, brass and ludalloy shelled drums, simply ran out of time. Dick stayed 30 minutes longer than he was scheduled to leave, and I had fealt I had been given enough of the man's generosity to Impose any other Q/A session with him.
Maybe David could ask B3 if he would know this answer to a very long question in my mind also??

I heard from a couple sources that there were at least 2 suppliers of the metal Supras & Supers when they were here in Chicago. John Aldridge would know as he is quite knowledgeable. 15 or so years ago he was selling undrilled Acousti-perfect brass, bronze, aluminum and steel shells. I presume he got them from one of those companies.
