Why did Rogers make so many 20" BD's in the 60's? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

You can find 22's from the 50's and also the 70's,but in the mid 60's,they sure made lots of 20"!

Why?

Hi Blair. You hit the nail on the head. 20" bass drums were plentiful during the Clev and Dayton eras as that was the popular size. When tuned properly, a Rogers 20" bass drum sounds much bigger than it's size. Why carry a 22" around with you if you could get a great sound out of a 20'? I think it also had to do with the style of music being played at the time. That big rock bass drum sound didn't start coming into vogue until later in the 60's and I think you start seeing more 22's when that happened.

Rogers 22" bass drums are not very common during the Cleveland beavertail era. You start seeing a few during the Dayton era and then they make a comeback during the Fullerton era.

I have only seen one or two 24" bass drums from the Clev beavertail era. They are far more rare than an 18" Cleveland bass drum. I am lucky to have a 24" Clev bass drum and it is a joy to play.

If you get the chance to pick up a Clev (or Dayton) 22", I highly recommend it. Here's one of my 22" bass kits (Cleveland) with a 60's red Sparkletone head and my favorite player snare - a 6.5 COB Powertone...

Hi Powertone,

I have a 22" B'Tail Cleveland...........

I grabbed it at Chicago show a few years back (shell only) for $40! BDP ,no less......no faded much,if at all..........

Someone added a extra Swivo at 12 'o clock though, near the back head........

Still,I love this drum, and just got a 16" BDP Cleve to complete last week!

It has the factory mount for a Splash in front of the tom,so that is a Buddy set up,no? Cymbal mount on right in the normal position......

Thought I had a line on a WMP 24" Cleve last week......turned out to be Fullerton :-(

I've wondered before if the famous Rogers 20-12-16 combo had anything to do with shipping. It's one of the few setups that can be nested in one box, 24x24x20.

Redneck.... Thanks. It is a joy to play as well.

Blair.... Good question re the mount placements. There are a couple of options. If your mounts are for the disappearing cymbal arms, my bet is that it is for the Cozy Cole Constellation set up. That set up had a disappearing mount in front of the tom and one on the right for a ride cymbal. The tom mount was pretty far to the side putting the tom in a less than ideal position, and I think alot of those bass drums owners had another swivo mount installed at 12 (where yours is) to move the ride tom over to a more practical playing position.

For reference, here is my Dayton era CC Constellation (22" bass drum) and it also has the 12 o'clock mount on it (although I currently have a knobby mount at the 12 position as I didn't have a good swivo mount to replace the battered original).

A Buddy style set up would have the two knobby cymbal mounts (one in front of the tom) for L rod cymbal arms. This would be "The Celebrity" style set up.

mlvibes...... Don't know about the stackable in one box thing. It is possible. I think that it was just the popular size configuration of the day. I have only seen one Rogers kit in original boxes. It was a Dayton era wildwood kit, and each drum was individually boxed.

Hey PT,

yes!Thats exactly how mine is!........

I'm pretty sure the mount at 12 was added later,as I recall the holes were a little rough before I put the plate on to cover them...............

I'm not sure why Rogers placed the rack tom so far to the side on the CC Constellation. I have been trying to get used to where mine is, but just got the correct swivo, so may try it from that center mount.
