Wrap Deterioration Last viewed: 40 minutes ago

Loading...

Has anyone seen wrap deteriorate to this level. It appears to be a finish Precision carried a number of years ago called pearl onyx. I don't see it listed any longer. It is clearly not the original Rogers black onyx material, but the level of failure is spectacular. It is as if it was gigged at both the North Pole and the Mohave Desert repeatedly. The kit is for sale on Reverb.

PS - the first sentence is a question, despite the missing punctuation to alert you to that fact. FYI

Not at that level. The one's far gone (the toms) look like a mosaic - sorta cool. Too bad there isn't some sort of filler that could tie it all together and make it one piece again. Too much work, no doubt; easier to rewrap.

My guess is that whatever glue they used didn't get along with that wrap. Back in the day Precision told folks to use Weldwood contact cement which is kind of nasty stuff. Now they say to only use water based contact cement like 3M 30NF (I believe they state somewhere that use of anything else will void their warranty).

To me it looks like an old-school cellulose acetate based wrap mated up with some sort of nasty chemical brew glue, add in some heat and/or sunlight (UV) and cook for a few decades.

Like Hobbs, I think it kinda looks cool.

Sort of looks like someone sand blasted it or powerwashed it.

No, never seen that before.

I see that the former owner was following standard protocol of hosing the drums off after each use, then drying them in a pizza oven.

Does Reverb mention the roundness of the shells? Hopefully it's just cosmetic. Although with that level of deterioration, I'm thinking maybe the shells could be out of round?

Really bizarre. But also really cool looking. I bet Magnus at Walopus could reproduce that pattern.

That's really interesting shrinkage. Notice how only the white pearl material has cracked into a mosaic pattern, but none of the black pearl chips have cracked. Two different materials mixed together which weren't compatible perhaps?

Well regardless, it looks like a perfect candidate for a rewrap if you can pick it up cheap.
