Caddy,Ingenius! Yes, it all comes down to the core, not the wrapping. I'm going to find some of these foam shooter disks and start experimenting. I'm trying to get a mallet that will have almost no individual stroke articulation at all, but just firm enough to vibrate the cymbal into a roll. Thanks for the tip!Mike

That is my aim also.. But with out the fluff fallout..

Cheers

Finally did a pair yesterday.. Fluffy Vater T6.. I used Microfibre dusting cloth with 4 turns of cotton string. Doped the string with super glue (note it reacts with the Micro fibre and you'll see a small vapour trail for a second or two). The ragged edge of the Micro fibre was shedding a little, so I coated the trimmed back edges with some PVA wood glue. This morning looks good, hard as a rock.. Happy with the result and the whole process took around 10 minutes...

Cheers

John

Put up a photo, John. I want to see how they came out. I really need to do mine. They look like a rabbit on acid!

Here you go... I gave them a quick run in.. to me they are just as soft as previous and still have a nice balance to them.. Just as caddy says it's the core that matters..

I (may) tidy up the edges a little more now that they are nice and hard..

Cheers

Thanks, LJ... you saw what mine look like in that video I posted. They really need some help. I'm just afraid of changing the sound, or the feel of the ones I have. I hold the mallet in my left hand traditional style (I don't switch to matched grip for mallets,) so that balance is real important to me in a set of mallets. The ones I have are perfect. Did the added weight change the feel of the sticks? (Move the balance point.) Do they sound different than just the cotton ball?

Purdie..

I don't think they sound any different at all.. and the balance is good.. just around 3-4mm larger in diameter... Actually I have a couple of pairs of harder felt beaters that I am going to do as well, I don't use them much because I find the felt a little too hard for my liking. I think I might double" wrap them with the Microfibre to soften them up a bit..

Cheers
