XP8 musings Last viewed: 12 hours ago

Yesterday I checked out an XP8 kit I am interested in. Great trip. I was a little surprised at the bearing edges - they have more or less a straight apex edge, not a double 45. And they are surprisingly heavy drums. Very solid. The chrome was in great shape and the hardware (all original) is holding up well. Wrap none too thrilling, but stuck on well and inside the drums (I took off heads) nicely done. I couldn't help but wonder what grade the outside layer of maple was and if it would stand up to a sunburst finish. Anyway, they tuned up easily. I'm seriously thinking of buying this kit for live. What a shame they didn't keep going - certainly a quality kit with heaps of mojo.

Typically covered drums are a "B" grade outer veneer with flaws, whether a small void or knot, etc. But, I restored a painted Leedy "Utility" from the 30's with beautiful birds-eye maple on the outside. And as far as double 45, I thought that was a fairly recent development.

Not center cut double. The edge is offcenter toward the outside, and the outside slope is small.

Interesting - When I got my XP-8 kit, I was surprised at how light they were compared to my Swivo kit.

interesting observation. These are not as heavy as my Clevelands but certainly heavier than the last 9/72's I sold. This kit was made around 1982. I didn't get a minute examination of the edges but I've never seen one exactly like it. A bit like my early Yamaha RA toms which were more or less straight. Or a Camco I guess but thinner and no re-rings (or undersized) I call Camcos Camgas now, since they look like congas to me lol

Not a 'finish ply' under that wrap. Might have seams around the middle, dark patches etc. Still smooth, but not cosmetically appropriate for a clear finish.

Thanks Dan. Thought that might be the case. Anyway, the wrap is in great condition and it's Mojave Red! Actually looks pretty cool.
