So i was in the market for a good spare single pedal (used) as i'll be storing it in one of the bars i play at (locked away in the storage offices of course !) and saw this Yamaha Flying Dragon pedal for a great price..

I tried one a long time ago and found them to be real smooth, quick and light, yet powerful and durable. However, after reading some forum threads from the Pearl website, some stated that there are 2 versions of this pedal. The early FD which had the glow in the dark wings on the bass plate, and the later version without it.. Some stated the first version had some issues, while the second version addressed all the issues it had, such as pedal hoop clamp loosening, beaters flying off, etc..

Has anyone ever had these issues with the first version and know if they did in fact address them in the second version ?

Other Pearl forum members stated that they had tried both versions and had no issues with both, and that they're solid, good pedals ..Here are two pics of both versions.. The one i'm looking at is the second version, without the glow in the dark wing sticker..

As usual any thoughts are appreciated..

I had one briefly. Really smooth pedal, but I recall it not clamping on the hoop reliably so I traded it off. I can't really pinpoint the cause of issue.

Which version did you have that caused the clamp to loosen ? I'm a little OCD when it comes to my drums and drum gear, and i think that an issue such as pedal hoop clamp loosening from time to time, would drive me nuts. That's enough for me not to buy this pedal if that is indeed the issue.. Thanks for your insight !

Obviously the presence of glow in the dark wings, would more than offset even total mechanical failure on the first down-stroke...

Really liked the Yamaha pedals I've used, never had a lever-clamp, which might not 'take' to having the BD front up too high?...or you have to learn how to 'set' it?...definitely not the same principle/action as tightening a good old screw.

I've already decided not to get it.. Not gonna risk buying something and then possibly having it fail on me in the middle of a gig.. The whole point was to get a spare that works and is durable.. I need the funds anyway to put towards new drum heads for my Yamaha kit.. Thanks to all for the insight.

I have one that that used to be my primary pedal. Now it's on my at home practice set.

It's a very nice pedal, but mine needs one of the bearings replaced as it makes noise. If the new version worked out the kinks, I would recommend it. Does the newer version fold up? That's huge with me.
