Hey guys. I'm looking to piece together a black yamaha recording custom set of toms. A Rc has always been a dream kit of mine. I currently have a Yamaha stage custom birch in raven black. Is it worth the time and money to really upgrade? I realize the Rc are legendary but how much difference is there really?

Is there any real difference in the pre yess and yess mounted?

Should I do this, I've found a pre yess 8x8 and 12x10,and yess mounted 10x9 and 14x12. I'd only be lacking a 16x14.

What I'd be selling to fund this is:

14x6.5 Drumcraft Cast Bronze snare

14x7 Pork pie cherry bubinga snare

21" zildjian k crash ride

My current yamaha stage custom birch kit.

I'd be left with a black Beauty, gretsch rosewood, ludwig acrolite, and gretsch mahogany side snare.

Thoughts? Opinions?

While certainly not a vintage kit, there may be members here who can help you out. I did own a beautiful Maple Custom Absolute kit 15+ years ago. It was a great sounding kit! As to your YESS question, there is a resonance difference between pre-YESS and YESS. Just how much can depend on tuning, heads, shell depth, etc. I had a custom-built kit well before my Yamaha kit, using a Yamaha ball/socket tom holder system, but pre-YESS. I don't recall EVER complaining about a lack of tom resonance!

I had an RC pre-yess kit a few years ago as well as an absolute birch kit. I paid $700 for the RC and $900 for the absolute. I prefered the absolute, the RC was ok, but I'd never buy another one unless it was just to re-sell. If I were you, I'd find a players grade Ludwig 60's kit, much cooler and you just can't beat that Ludwig sound.
