Hi, Folks
I just finished restoring this old Sea Green Pearl Slingerland Artist bass drum. Shown here with a matching Artist snare drum. The original hoops were a real mess and I thought they might not pull through. At some point in its history, I think the batter side hoop was replaced, using a hoop with a more narrow inlay channel. Probably, the inlay was cut to fit. After removing several layers of paint and shellac, a gold leaf paint was applied. This would have been the original color (evidence of original gold paint was found under the other layers). The original owner of the drum was a careless smoker and there were two cigarette burns in the finish. I left one as is but chose to fill the other larger burn that had gone through to the wood. Since a small section of the thinner inlay was missing, I cut a small piece and filled the burn hole. This was followed by wet sanding and polishing. Really quite difficult to see until you get close. The drum also has 4 small holes from an internal calf skin heater.
