Slingy Black Sparkle Last viewed: 3 hours ago

There's a pretty good chance that I'll be picking up this Slingerland black sparkle kit this week-end. The shells are 3-ply with wooden reinforcement rings and the interiors are painted Slingy's "chocolate milkshake" color. I'm figuring 1970. Do you agree? Thanks.

Thanks, Wayne. I've always wanted a kit in that wrap. Unless I'm mistaken, I think 1970 was the last year that Slingerland painted the interior shells that "chocolate milkshake" color.

OldSchool-Let the Slingy pros chime in and you`ll get your answer for sure, but i think you`re right on the year-1970/chocolate milkshake interior.I love that wrap!

Great looking kit! Love the dual bass drum spurs. As to the year, serial numbers will really help. I've got a similar kit in Sparkling Purple Pearl with 5-digit serial numbers, all beginning with 2xxxx. My kit is a 1971. The style of tone control (muffler) will also help. If you can post serial numbers and maybe a shot of the tone controls, we can get close to the year. Still, it does look like early 70's.

Hi OldSchool, great looking kit, hope you get them man.

I think you're right with the date of the kit, hard to tell from the pics but

the badge on the bass drum looks like a 1970 trans badge which was only

used for about 6 months. I have a kit from the same year, chocolate interiors and trans badge. Serial numbers should be low as Slingerland re set them in 1970. Buy the kit man, It's a classic! I love the black sparkle wrap.

Cheers Stevo.

@ idrum4fun (Mark): Thanks for the positive feedback. The gentleman selling the kit purchased it from the original owner a few years ago and said they're in great shape. He has never taken them out of his house since he purchased them. He mentioned that the worst feature about the kit is the substantial amount of dust on it and that a small portion of original paint is missing from the wood on the resonant side bass drum hoop. No modifications at all and all original hardware. He's including three original cymbal stands, original snare stand, original Sound King snare, hi-hat stand, bass drum pedal, original bags and a Ludwig snare case. I never understood why some of the Slingy bass drums from this period have the dual spurs while others don't. Was it simply the size of the bass drum or did it depend on the model of the particular kit? I can't provide you with the serial numbers or pics of the tone controls since I don't have access to any additional pics right now. I'll find out on Saturday when I see them in person. BTW ... You've certainly set the bar EXTREMELY high with that purple sparkle kit of yours. Flat out stunning! Thanks for sharing the pic.

@ Creighton: Thanks. I'm hoping so, too.

@ Stevo: Thanks for the positive input and the information regarding the trans badge. I agree that it "appears" to be a trans badge. I'll find out for sure on Saturday.

Everyone should own at least one Slingerland kit. Hope you get them. Nice wrap - same for the purples. That great "Slingy Sound!"

That's what I've been trying to impress upon the people who are tunnel-visioned about other brands. Slingies and SlingerLeedys from the mid 20th century are my all time favorite drums. I gigged them for most of my playing years. Good long term memory says that, every time I owned another brand, I'd go right back to Slingies for the next working drum set. My current little vintage collection includes two Slingy sets, two SlingerLeedy sets, and one set of rescued/rehabbed/rewrapped orphans of Leedy and Slingy drums. My other three vintage sets include one each of Fibes, Walberg & Auge, and Ludwig. If I were forced to sell off al but one drum set, the one keeper would be my 1963 SlingerLeedy set in Black Diamond Pearl.

I have not owned that version of Black Sparkle, but I have owned the version that Slingerland sometimes called Black Sparkle or Sparkling Black. That was the solid black with the sprinkling of little lavender sparkles. I hope that the OP can get that beautiful drum set.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
