1920's Ludwig Set Last viewed: 13 minutes ago

Loading...

I hope everyone is doing well! I have been on this forum for several years and this is my first time back (Old username: Drumbum3131)

Does anyone have any information on this set? Dated to early 20's off the badge. Any clue as to what they might be worth cleaned up? I was told the 8 lug snare is more rare and that most were 10?

Any information would be great. Stoked to be back - this forum has given me so much information and knowledge!

Cheers

I was watching that, but it was pick up only on the west coast.

Mid to late 20's on the snare drum, which probably is $600-700 alone.

Someone got a bargain!

8 lugs was standard until the late 1920's with Ludwig and Ludwig I think?

Well I picked these up from LA this morning - these drums are absolutely gorgeous! I cannot wait to get them detailed and reassembled to play. The solid mahogany shell snare is one of the best built snares I have ever picked up.

Only one other that I can find online with 8 lugs and the same throw-off: https://reverb.com/item/2759571-vintage-ludwig-solid-mahogany-snare-drum-1920s-30s-original-mint-collector

I am through the disassembly and treatment of the wood. Pictures coming:

Very nice!

There's your hoop mount bass drum spurs.

That comb lookin' thing, not sure what that's for? It could be what holds a cymbal (off to the side, hoop mounted) for the bass drum pedal clanger to hit.

I am also wondering what the comb like part is used for.

Does anyone have a pic of this part in use?

Some Photos from today - before and after! I believe the comb part was used as some form of a sound maker.

I drew a rough picture of what I thought it was for in my post.

The comb part has slots for adjustment. The red circle depicts a cymbal and you can see the clanger mounted to the bass drum pedal mallet arm.

Like they used on the old trap kits. It's my guess anyway. Car Driving2

Mr. Olimpas

Very good idea regarding the purpose for the notched part.

But,...... I think it was used for something else.... maybe.

See pics of mounting clamps and bars for Bass Drum Pedal Operated Cymbals.

These seem simple and designed for holding the cymbal from the BD hoop.

These notch guys seem destined for some other purpose.

I have seen these notched parts before and heard all kinds of explanations of what they were used for.

Like "Stick holder" or "Guiro percussion device."

Non really proven.

I am now intrigued and need to know what they were for.

Edit.

Maybe they ARE for the Bass Drum Mounted Cymbal.
