From radioking

I just called and the vintage guys won't be in for an hour or so.. will keep you posted. BowingYou all gave me key info to argue the price..!

I thought you had already paid for this and you're having it shipped?

Hey I just found this radio king snare online at Guitar center for 300 bucks. It is missing a few lugs and the tension rods. I'm having it free shipped to a local store,( I can return it, which is whats good about GC.) This is the only pic I have.. I'm going to call and get more pics, Provided everything else is original and the bearing edge is good. DO you think it's worth 300.oo.. I have no idea how I'm going to find the right lugs for this..total impulse buy..

I still think you could come out good on this at $300, but if you can wiggle them down a bit, go for it, what the heck.......

I did, but I can cancel the order. I pulled the trigger on it and then realized there were more flaws than I expected with the drum. Thats the advantage with Guitar Center..No shipping costs and a very good return policy. Just ship to a store near you and it wont cost anything.(for me I save on taxes) I'm hoping to get a discount rather than loose the sale or I may bag the whole deal if the drum was altered too much.

The guys are going to call me back. The sales person I did speak said that all the lugs are included but the pic was taken before the drum was put back together after it was cleaned up. He seemed to think it was the original finish but we all doubt that..

That may be the original finish underneath a transparent custom paint job, but the blue is not original.

Hey Everyone

So the scoop is that the missing lugs and tension rods have all been replaced, most likely replicas. This is a single ply with support rings. The sale guy is telling me the finish is very old and does;t look new but I think Slingerlynn nailed it and this must be a lacquer over the original finish. Rims say radio king No Badge..snare mechanism works well.

Just a foot note to all, if you ship to store you can negotiate the price and refuse delivery. If you ship to your house you get the delivery charge and have to pay to return. or at least pay one of the delivery charges. so ship to store is the way to go. When it arrives I can look it over and then negotiate with the people in my home town if it's too high...

Should be interesting.. I'll ping back in a few days when I get a look at it...

thanks so much.. Rich

Singly ply maple, Radio King hoops and working clam shell mechanisms are all pluses. Repro lugs are acceptable, but the badge will set you back $20 if you're lucky, usually around $40-50. You have to ask yourself how bad you want it and how much your willing to put into it. It sounds like you can use it as is, but you'll probably want a cloud badge. Use the molested finish to talk them down (show them the correct finish - see VDF and there is a marble finish kit on feeBay now). Also, use the unoriginal lugs and missing badge to your advantage. Tell them how much money you'll have to spend to replace the badge alone.

Again, good luck and keep us posted.

I hear yah, Thats what the store the drum originates from is telling me. At least I'll be able to walk if the drum looks fishy in person..

I like the molested paint reference makes it seem unnatural to paint a vintage drum..

In my humble opinion: If you are looking to actually play that drum you will be greatly disappointed because of the Clam Shell strainer...now if the finish is original/special order/one-ff etc. then you have a collectible but still a non-playable collectible. Just my opinion.

Mike if you don't mind me asking what drawbacks does the Clam Shell strainer have? I'd love to buy a old RK someday but would like to know the plus/minus of them. Thanks, Glenn.

I'm wondering now myself because I'm desperately searching for a few clam shell parts to get my late 50s Super GK put back together and playable. I've read on the forum that they are very finicky...not easy to properly tension the snare wires.
