1948 Gretsch Broadkaster Snare...need suggestions and answers. Last viewed: 5 minutes ago

Did a combo of stripping and sanding. Strip first then some light sanding down the home stretch. A buddy of mine had a great mask so I should live to play this thing. The spacing on the throw off holes is 1 inch between the top and bottom holes (from the center of the screws) and an inch and a half from. Thanks for letting me know about the colors offered I think I am going to go the dark mahogony route.

Glad I could help and thanks for the measurements. Looking forward to pictures; and when you're taking them could you include one of the wood before any stain - I assume its maple but maybe already mahogany? Mahogany takes stain really well, but maple doesn't, though you can find tricks to make it work.

I would love to see a pic of the strainer underneath the cover plate if you get the chance? The measurements are very close to the renown stainer so maybe would be interchangeable. I'm asking because I have a line on a 1947 snare that's missing its strainer, and the renown strainers are MUCH more common than the one you have.

Ducos are always maple underneath.......

It would not adhere to Mahogany well.

From auto.pilot

about 30 minutes. I put a bunch of rusty parts in a Gatorade bottle about 1/3 full of full strength vinegar. I shook the mixture while running back and forth for a pizza. The results were amazing. jim

I am totally amazed how well vinagar works, beats the hell out of any product on the market! Thanks a million +1

Wow, that's stunning wood grain - certainly looks like maple as has been said. It will look awesome with a finish on it.

And the strainer photo proves that this is basically a renown strainer (with a different lever), and with a detachable cover over it. Thanks again.

I recently posted on the VDF asking for suggestions and answers about my 1948 Gretsch Broadkaster Snare and you chimed in with some great info. I am almost done with the project but have hit a couple snags with the hardware. The strainer has some issues and I am taking it to a place in town to get repaired and I also noticed the tone control looked funky underneath the felt. The top bar beneath the two felt mufflers was bent down and curved out. I cannot tell if this is normal or not because I cannot find any other good examples of this drum anywhere online.

It looks damaged to me from one angle and like it might be intentional because of the second smaller muffler underneath from another.

Anyway I was wondering if you could send me a picture of what yours looks like on that beautiful 47 you have. No need to take the drum apart...just a shot of the bar underneath the 2 round felts would answer my question. ...or I could send you a pick and you could tell me how it compares to what you have.

You can kinda see what I'm talking about in the tone control shot I posted already.

Cheers and thanks,

Derek

Derek, Yours appears to be bent. I am unable to include an attatchment in the PM so I am posting it on the thread. Here is mine. I hope this helps. Ron

Finally finished the project ! Big thank you to Steve (dolfan54) for getting me the help I needed to get the strainer working again. I hated to say goodbye to the original duco but I am really pleased how this turned out.
