From Meat the Beat

Thanks Mike,Its an 8 lugger tho, must be my pics. Yes I intend to keep it natural finish - in fact I'm thinking about wether I laquer it myself or get someone who really knows what they're doing. I got a Cape cod metal polish cloth yesterday to get the nickel back up to standard - just need an original nickel rim now and the proper P48 throwoff & some replacement wires as the ones on there were a little battered.I'll keep y'all posted.Meat

by looking at your closer to finished pics, this is def a 6 lug, unless your camera is a really wide angle.

i have a 1958 transition badge that has a p-85 strainer updated on it.

i like the drum. record with it on occasion.

So here at last....

Is the (almost) finished Luddy. Just a decent badge at the right price to find but that can wait.

Finally drilled the shell for the correct throw-off (pretty nerve wracking!!)

So it now has a clear coat lacquer finish over the natural grain. I have kept the original NOB hardware and tried to clean it up as best as I could. The correct strainer has been re-instated and the only non-original part is a set of new Pure sound 16 strand wires.

So I will play out with it tomorrow night. Have tried both my fav the coated Ambassador and a Fiberskin 3 on it. The FS gives a good bark but a lot of overtones and ring, whereas the CA is more controlled and gives a more definite crack. The extra depth of the 6 1/2" shell and the 6 lugs means I am having to up my tuning game, but cant wait to get it on the gig and give it a damn good thrashing!!!

Thanks for all your tips, I am pleased with the low outlay result - the drum in its original state cost me just $30 at a local flea market, and waiting on the correct parts at a sensible price makes completing it very rewarding.

Anyone with a correct transition badge and NOB grommet let me know.

Enjoy the pics....

So the gig went well, the snare took a little tuning thru the first few songs of the show, but at a medium to hi tuning I found a sound I became increasingly happier with. A deliberate report with a warmish & controlled overtone. Rimshots sound good (tho I've gotten a little too used to die-cast hoops from my other snares I think!) with a hearty crack, but not overly loud. Ideal pub gig snare. Held tuning well for the rest of the show. I don't think this drum will have the tuning versatility of something more up to date, but its character & tone way make up for this.

Will check in with a final update after a few more shows and a final pic once it gets it's transition badge back.

Cheers All
