1965 Slingerland 6 lug Student Snare Last viewed: 4 minutes ago

Hey Guys,

Just picked this snare up a few days ago and I am really diggin it!

It is gold sparkle (don't know the official name of the color) and really is in great condition for being 50 plus years old!

Just took the heads off and polished everything up and put new heads on. I put an Evans Genera HD Dry on the batter and an Evans Hazy 300 on the bottom.

I'm thinking everything is original but I'm no expert so I'm not sure.

It had a Slingerland concert stamped batter head an a no name snare side head.

It has a 12 strand snare wire attached with white rope.

The bearing edges are in great condition. Just lightly ran some 600 grit sand paper over them.

The snare beds seem deep but looking at pictures of other 6 lug Slingerland's of the era they look similar.

I can't see any fading of the wrap. Thought maybe I'd see a difference in shades on the wrap when the heads were off but did not. The wrap is good and tight.

The chrome on the hoops are great and I was surprised at how hefty the hoops are.

There are a few flecks on the chrome on the lugs but not bad at all.

Inside the drum is stamped P and Dec 65. There is also "566-9" penciled on the inside (don't know what that stands for). The rings show no sign of separation. There is a bit more glue marks inside than I would have thought.

It also came with the original case.

It is tuned fairly low and have not have had time to mess with the tuning range. I just took this to practice tonight and the band mates loved it!

Beautiful drum! It looks in fantastic shape for its age, must have been stored in the case for many years to have the wrap not fade. Other than the rope on the snare wires it looks great

Nice drum in good condition, looks to be well cared for over the years.

I have two of them 1964 WMP and 1967 red sparkle.

Love them both! Clapping Happy2

The case is a little rough, but it did it's job.

I wasn't sure about the rope if it was correct or not. I found some pictures of Slingerlands of the same era with what looks to be the same and some with a much thinner string.

What would have been original?

Hi gunnellett!

I have 5 Slingerland Deluxe Student snare drums in my collection, 2 of which are all original. Those 2 drums use the thicker snare string like your drum. So, yes, it was what Slingerland was using at the time. Oh, and one of those drums is also Sparkling Gold Pearl like yours, but somewhat faded. Finding one as nice as yours means it was most likely in the case for decades and not exposed to UV sunlight. Congrats on a great looking snare drum!

Forgot to mention about the snare beds. They were on the deep side...and many are not properly centered!

The snare side rim does have a dent on the hole the snare ties go through on the strainer side. It looks like it can be pushed back straight but I didn't wan't to mess with it and potentially crack the chrome or knock the rim out of round. It actually gives the drum a little character.

The fun thing about this snare is with it being a student model, it was probably some kids pride and joy 50 years ago walking out of the music store with it so bringing it back to life and using it is pretty cool!

Does anyone know why "566-9" would have been written in pencil on the inside of the snare?

It would have been for wrap/hardware assembly purposes. Not much for decoder charts out there.

Nothing special here but I like them.
