As has been stated, already, the 12" tom toms had small lugs and the rest of the toms all had the regular sized lugs. That was Ludwig's style. I have seen a very few examples of 1970's 12" toms that had the regular sized lugs, though. And example of this can be seen in the Vintage drum Guide's special Jazzette section on the black cortex kit....

And, yes, the years from 1967-1970 were really transitional for Ludwig. There are often discrepancies among drums separated by only a few months. It's all rather "silly", really, because when they drums were new, NO ONE CARED about any of those details. But, of course, nowadays, the "game" of collecting has some rules and certain collectors find a big challenge in seeking out "THE" best example of whatever kit or drum it might be. When it comes to vintage Ludwig drums and the rarer finishes like MO, CM, PR, the best examples are the ones that are unfaded.
That's why I think it really is an important factor that this particular example of Mod Orange is missing most of its purple. IF...and I stress IF it was a perfect, unfaded example, then it would change the generally-perceived value quite a bit -at least to the perfectionists of the collecting world. And, it's my belief that the perfectionists of the collecting world WILL pay dearly for the best examples...I mean a LOT more. But, it's gotta be perfect....or, it's gotta be the most-complete...or the the most something that puts it into its own category. Of course, these nitpicking details have next to nothing to do with sound...and, conversely, the look or rarity has no bearing on whether some drunk will spill a drink on them or not if you take them into bar gig...;)....Sound? Price? Rarity? Look? What's it gonna be?
The person looking for a value, will be insulted by the sale of a drum for a high price. A person looking for the drum that conveys a memory to them will understand paying whatever it takes to possess that memory. A guy in the studio doesn't care about whether the toms have small or large lugs or what the wrap looks like. When a value-seeker and a perfectionist collector meet up at a drum discussion forum, then there is a potential for a heated debate to break out because they don't have identical rules for the game.
First thing I look for a on a Psych Red kit is GREEN. First thing I look for on a Mod Orange kit is PURPLE! But, at the end of the day...to each his own!
