1969 Ludwig Hollywood MOD ORANGE Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

I'm not sure what you mean if one of the toms has different lugs. 8x12 toms had small classic lugs in the 60's and everything else had large lugs. That is normal.

Buzz my mod orange set is date stamped march 26th 1969 and it has keystone badges. It came with the 70's style logo head though. That pasrticular head showed sometime in early-mid 1968 I think. I had a silver sparkle super clasic once from July 1968 and it had that head.(never should have sold that set!)

I have seen very few if next to no B/O drums with 1969 date stamps. I know they are out there because it looks like B/O badges appeared sometime in mid-late 1969. There is a member here that has his original hollywood Ludwig set stamped Dec 1969. It has white interiors and the 1968 style double tom mount. At first when I asked him if his date was right I could'nt believe it because that set should have had late 1967-early 1968 date stamps. Sure enough the set was clearly dated dec 1969. I hope the owner does'nt mind me posting this. This is clearly one of the oddities that is Ludwig!

It looks to me that only the 13" has large lugs !! It could be an illusion though !!

Hey all I have been a member for a while and haven't really ever posted but I though this might be post-worthy. I just got done with them. ALL ORIGINAL - NO EXTRA HOLES - FULL RESTORE (cleaned no re-wrap or anything)Curious as to what you all thought that they'd be worth as well. I mean I have an idea myself but I'm just curious as to the range I might get. ENJOY!

I can almost smell the citrus. Very cool wrap and kit. Keepers (if you have the room).

As has been stated, already, the 12" tom toms had small lugs and the rest of the toms all had the regular sized lugs. That was Ludwig's style. I have seen a very few examples of 1970's 12" toms that had the regular sized lugs, though. And example of this can be seen in the Vintage drum Guide's special Jazzette section on the black cortex kit....

And, yes, the years from 1967-1970 were really transitional for Ludwig. There are often discrepancies among drums separated by only a few months. It's all rather "silly", really, because when they drums were new, NO ONE CARED about any of those details. But, of course, nowadays, the "game" of collecting has some rules and certain collectors find a big challenge in seeking out "THE" best example of whatever kit or drum it might be. When it comes to vintage Ludwig drums and the rarer finishes like MO, CM, PR, the best examples are the ones that are unfaded.

That's why I think it really is an important factor that this particular example of Mod Orange is missing most of its purple. IF...and I stress IF it was a perfect, unfaded example, then it would change the generally-perceived value quite a bit -at least to the perfectionists of the collecting world. And, it's my belief that the perfectionists of the collecting world WILL pay dearly for the best examples...I mean a LOT more. But, it's gotta be perfect....or, it's gotta be the most-complete...or the the most something that puts it into its own category. Of course, these nitpicking details have next to nothing to do with sound...and, conversely, the look or rarity has no bearing on whether some drunk will spill a drink on them or not if you take them into bar gig...;)....Sound? Price? Rarity? Look? What's it gonna be?

The person looking for a value, will be insulted by the sale of a drum for a high price. A person looking for the drum that conveys a memory to them will understand paying whatever it takes to possess that memory. A guy in the studio doesn't care about whether the toms have small or large lugs or what the wrap looks like. When a value-seeker and a perfectionist collector meet up at a drum discussion forum, then there is a potential for a heated debate to break out because they don't have identical rules for the game.

First thing I look for a on a Psych Red kit is GREEN. First thing I look for on a Mod Orange kit is PURPLE! But, at the end of the day...to each his own!

in restoration a artist can restore the faded purple very subtle

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

It's not mine. It was owned by a former member and he was gracious enough to let us keep the picture on file at the Vintage Drum Guide site for reference purposes.

That drum in the picture is a 'piccolo' snare drum (the metal version of the earlier Jazz Combo snare drum). I imagine it would be very staccato and 'tight' in its sound, but I've never played on, personally.

From Ludwig von Buzzthoven

Just out of curiosity, how do you know they are '69's? Is there a date stamp on them someplace? And what are the interiors, white or clear? The reason why I am asking is I have a '68 Mod Orange kit w/ clear interiors. I have seen 2 other MO kits from '69, and both of them had B/O badges. My 13/16/22 kit is just about in perfect condition, except for the normal fade of the pinks / reds. The orange is still very vibrant, however.

The bass drum and floor have the stamp of 69'. I also found it under the tom mount screws on the 12 and 13. They do have the clear interiors as they are the maple/pop/maple. It is a late 69' because the snare that I am confident came with the kit is a b/o acrolite with no serial number and the deeper badge grommet making it 69-70 snare.
