Well, I'll be cleaning this up and also wondered about cleaning the nickel hareware and what product to use. Filtz? Rubbing compound and a magic eraser? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. I will post pics when finished.

I like flitz for Nickel. Either that or cape cod polishing clothes.

That's a great looking drum...
I think I'd be levelling the remaining piece of hoop in between the cutaways in order to fit just the one piece of timber insert , this should be stronger and an easier fit. The crack should be an easy glue job..

and a question. What sort of pin is missing here? Looks like there should be one for engaging the snare wires..

Thanks in advance for any input.
Man that snare is really amazing!!! Good luck on the rest of your restoration.

wow. I love super sensitives and that is one beautiful example. great job so far
I don't know about the older models like that but the ones from the 60s and up had a rivet in the hole you have circled. and if you still need wires I might have an nos set of adjustables kicking around if youre interested.
Thank you Curtis and SealClubbinEskimo.
I did order wires already.....thank you.
I know I can make some kind of pin for it but would like to see what one is supposed to look like if possible to try and emulate it.
Thanks to all in advance for your input and comments!
Nice old drum! 1939 was pretty much the end of the line for Ludwig's solid maple shell construction. By 1940, they went to three ply shells. Unfortunately, World War Two put an end to the Super snare mechanism. In the first post war Ludwig catalog (1948), there are no Super-Ludwig snare drums offered.
Mark,
I have heard July of 39 was last month/year of solid shells..
True or not...not sure......
Great job on the hoop repair! Glad to see it is in good hands.
