40s Leedy drum head Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hey Gurus, Did Leedy (elkhart) used synthetic reso heads for the tacked on reso heads? Can tension be adjusted? The sweet kit I ran across appears to be from the 1940s and has T-rods on batter side of the rack tom but a tacked on reso head. A bit loose, but it does not look to be a calf skin. Any help?

Thanks Lew

The tacked on heads were usually pig skin which is much thicker than calf, it is often painted which gives it a plastic look, try using a little water on the skin and then a hairdryer, with patience this can take the slackness out.

I don't believe "synthetic" drum heads were produced during Elkhart period Leedy's heyday. Tacked resonator side heads were often pigskin. Sometimes the skins were whitewashed. Of course, other possibilities exist, but if the kit you found is in its original condition the tacked heads are most likely pigskin.

Great help! If its skin then I will use try some moisture and drying to tighten the head. I did not think they would be synth heads, but sure did not look like calfskins. I have used water to tighten Calf so I am comfortable with doing it.

Big thanks!

Yep, Its all original. My neighbor found them in a daughter of a big band drummer's attic. Rail Mount and all Hardware, many cyms, and stands! Dusty, but wrap is pristine. Lots of effects too! No one will will part with them but I get to play them whenever I want.

I will try to get some pics.

You've already gotten good info, so I'll just say, pics please! I love me some Elkhart Leedy's! Got myself a '49 with t-rods top and bottom...absolutely love it!

My 40's war time Leedy's have tacked reso's that are whitewashed. I know they are not synthetic and they feel the same as the calf skin batters.

Here are some pics of the 1942 Leedys before disassembly for cleaning. I will try to take better ones when done. A big suitcase of hardware for the rail is being cleaned. Its all there and in very good shape; even the drum keys in the key holders. 3 Pc Kit Snare, BD, mounted tom with one tension head. 10 cymbals, wood blocks, cowbells, triangle, BD muffler, spurs, throne, stands. Amazing.
