58' Gretsch Progressive Jazz kit/Sound File Last viewed: 42 minutes ago

Hi all,

I have to apologize for how short this clip is. I haven't quite mastered getting video ready for steaming on the web yet, so I'm ending up with large file sizes that need to be trimmed for You Tube. I'll figure it out...

In the meantime, this is the 58' Gretsch kit that I re-wrapped in 'Merlot' (Burgundy Sparkle) and although it's a short clip, you'll get a chance to hear the snare and the toms. The bass drum did not come through at all. It's there, you just can't hear it. My videocam has a small built-in mic and it's ok, but it's not great.

Anyway, here's the 58' 3-ply Brooklyn factory kit!

Comments on the drums are welcome. I love them. Nice deep, warm sound. The snare is tuned to sing and it does! I'm surprised because I don't usually like Gretsch snares. I like this one! 5.5" deep, 3-ply.

I dig it, Juanito...and the snare does sing, alright! What kind of heads are you using on the toms?

REMO coated Ambassadors on top, Evans clear reso's. The drums have a nice low fundamental, they sound great 'down low' where I have them. Except for the snare, I have that puppy cranked!

It is! It's one I've been playing around with for a couple of weeks. My main ride is a 21" Istanbul Sultan, dark and slightly trashy like an old K. This one in the video is a 60's 22" A Zildjian but it's a little on the high/bright side (and ringy) for my taste too. Sounds good for 'certain things'. Weak bell too! I prefer the bell on the 18" Sabian Vault cymbal.

Awesome sounding kit and cymbals. I could "feel" the bass drum also. Very good drumming also. Good job John!

Thanks Gerald and Glenn for kind comments. Yep the old Gretsch kit has a great sound and feel to it. I think it's all in my head, but I feel more 'comfortable' playing on an old kit like this one than on a DW or some other modern kit. I owned a Premier Maple Artist kit awhile back, really nice set of drums, but they felt 'stiff' to me somehow. Same for a DW kit I played. It feels like I'm visiting in somebody else's house. Know what I mean? Sit my a$$ down behind an old Ludwig, or Gretsch kit and it feels like putting on cozy slippers. I know, it's all in my head, but there it is. That's how I feel playing modern kits. Give me 50 year old, made in USA stuff any day and twice on Sunday! Love my old drums.

I didn't hear "low" toms, they sounded pretty high, like a jazz kit.
