58' Gretsch Progressive Jazz kit/Sound File Last viewed: 4 minutes ago

From Purdie Shuffle

Mark, they really are as low as they can go! I'm just slightly above wrinkle on the toms! (13", 16") If I tune them in the middle of their range, then they sound 'jazzy' (high) to me. I like them where they are now. I have a crappy mic in the videocam I'm using which I'm sure isn't helping much sound quality-wise in the recording. John

The kit sounds great and you have a nice touch. Maybe it's those Gretsch shells that's throwing me, because I can can tune the toms on my Rogers kit so low, they rumble.

Has to be the difference in shells -and- bearing edges! Rogers has those sharp, modern sounding double 45's and the Gretsch has that fat round-over. It's going to make for a substantial difference in sound and response. Thanks for the kind words, Mark. I really liked your stuff too! I heard that clip you made of your Rogers kit and the drums kick arse and your playing was excellent. (I dig the band too!) Nice job on that one, I left a comment for you in the thread.

Real nice kit and great sample of your chops John.

I wish more of you here would show your kits while playing.

I agree! Along with all the information that we generate about vintage drums, it's important to have sound files to refer to so that people can 'hear' some of the things we only talk about. Describing a sound is no match for hearing a sound.

I've been doing it! Little by little I'm posting up sound samples of some of the classic kits that I'm so very lucky to own. Johnnyringo (Mark) posted up a thread with a sound file of his Rogers kit. You should check it out. I hope more guys start to do it. Collectively, we own and play some of the best drums in the world, some of the best drums ever made! I want to hear them.

Hi John, nice kit! I was wondering the sizes of the toms on this kit? Are all 4 3 ply drums? Im the same as you, dont really like gretsch snares. But I have some 3 ply that sound great and are my favorites.

13", 16". All 3-ply shells. And yes, the snare is a surprise in this kit. I never owned a Gretsch snare that I was 'crazy' about, but this one is really responsive and fun to play.
