6 Ply 40's Gretsch snare Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

I mentioned on another thread HERE that I had an old 6 ply Gretsch snare and was asked for pics. Here you go. As you can see the paint is so bad I've put this one aside until I can figure out what to do with it. If I even cleaned it a lot of the paint would flake off.

So here is at least one more drum from the 40's with the thick 9mm shells (Hard to see but I count 6 ply layers). This one has no date stamp so I'm not sure when it was made. It is about double the thickness of a three ply shell from the same era. I also have a 3-ply snare with rocket lugs that is stamped with a 1947 date which is about 5 mm thick shell.

One other notable difference with this shell is it that it looks like all six plies are the same wood - it looks like six plies of maple with no poplar. Which also adds to the weight and makes it hard to count the number of plies since one ply looks just like the next.

I remember you and Gary talking about this, thanks for sharing this with us, Never say never with Gretsch. Very cool. Most certainly a Gretsch built shell. Love Broadkaster era Gretsch drums.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I have the same drum in a 3 ply and opted to strip it down to the bare wood and refinish. Looked pretty good under the old Duco.

Here is the before:

I would tack rag the flakeing off the shell because you`re not gonna save it or get it to adhear again. Then I would put alot of coats of furniture wax on it to preserve what`s left. It wont be good looking but it will be original and retain it`s integrity/value.

The The Osiecki bros. music company is still around, but it`s on 29th St in Errie Penn. now (around the corner off Parade St. !i They sell GP precussion stuff/kits now !i

Nice job, beautiful drum. You have to replace that wire you're using to hold the snares on, it will eventually cut into the wooden snare beds and then you'll have a real problem!

Great save!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Thanks for the tip Purdie. I hate those wires anyhow. Believe it or not oddball that armor is original to the drum. Crazy right? Seen a few other Broadkasters from this time frame with em. Hey 4moreyears if you decide to get rid of that paint make sure you get a good breather. I am pretty sure that old duco paint job is full of lead.

Thanks for posting the thread! That's a beautiful drum - nice job!

Yes - it is difficult to tell how many plys are there. Some are very thick of course. I count 4 or maybe 5 but it's hard to tell there may be 6.

Could you get some more close photos of different areas of the edges up here? and a nice clear shot looking down on the drum showing the edge? I'd like to see where the plys join.

I also have a 1940's Gretsch snare drum with a very thick shell - like yours.

I count 4plys in mine here.

If you look at 4myrs. third pic down, you can see clearly the scarf joint on the inner layer !i

Yes - I can see that. I count 4 maybe 5 plys. There may be six - I'm hoping there are - but I can't count them from the photo. Often in a photo an outer layer finsih may look like a ply layer.

All the 6ply shells, including my 47 floor tom pictured here, have thin plys. The 3/4/5 ply shells that I've seen all have the thicker plys like my snare above and yours. But that does not mean there are not exceptions (a 6ply like yours?).
