60's Ludwig ID Help Last viewed: 21 minutes ago

Alright everybody...

So I picked up a set 1966 Sky Blue Pearl Ludwigs in near mint condition. The sizes were 22/16/14/12. The pictures are in the link below.

The question I have is the 14" tom...The lugs look like Ludwig, but I've only seen them in the Mach 4 catalogues and the much newer Super Classic sets. From what the seller told me, the set was his grandfather's (His name was Doug as you can see from the inscribing on the tom mount pic), and he got the tom custom made in 1970 for his kit. However there is no Ludwig badge, just Ludwig hardware and what looks to be Ludwig lugs. The drum is painted white interior and all of the inner shell hardware looks to match every other Ludwig I've seen. I guess I'm asking if this tom is REALLY a ludwig and if it is, why is there no badge. Any information would be appreciated...Custom ordered vintage gear is not my specialty.

My guess is that that is a 10x14 marching drum (snare or tenor) that someone added to the set as a tom. Badges did have a tendency to disappear sometimes, especially on drums that belonged to a school. Top hoop looks like its a Slingerland rather than a Ludwig

You could order those lugs on a Ludwig tom....but a 14" mounted tom came with 6 lugs at that time, whereas a marching drum would have 8 or 10...

I think it's a "real" Ludwig, but a marcher and someone scammed the badge at some point in its life.

That actually seems like the most reasonable explanation. The only thing that's still unclear is the badge thing for me. Not only is there no badge, but there's no hole for where a badge would have been. I guess someone could have filled the hole, but there's no markings anywhere on the inside of the drum that would suggest that. Either way thanks for the help.

That is odd. I assumed there was a vent hole just that the badge was missing. I suppose it could have somehow got out of the factory without a vent/badge but seems somewhat unlikely. But even if someone built this themselves they would generally put in a vent.

Early 60's Slingerland toms didn't have badges or vents, not that I think that is what you have. Hmmmm? It is a puzzler.

Does anyone agree that it is/was a Hollywood since it has the center post?

Here is a picture of the set which I now own. It needs work.

if its got a center post that appears to be original, and has no signs of holes for a rail mount, it should be a Hollywood kit.

I think it is. I haven't removed a head on it yet to check that or to look for a date stamp.

The post itself is different - I will try to post a pic of it soon. From looking at Cook's Ludwig book, I think it could be an S-235 center post for Standard S-340 drums.

Mike - you may remember I asked you about the 66 Hollywood set having matching 12 or 13, well this is why I asked.

I do remember that. ive seen some non catalog configurations before, like two 13's. the lugs on that 14 just don't fit it to the plan quite right, I don't think. that's a nice looking set. I love sky blue pearl..

isn't that the very uncommon late 60's or early 70's post that held three toms?
