Acrolite drumset? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I wonder if Ludwig ever considered an acrolite drumset? I think it would have made a rather attractive-looking kit. Maybe it was considered, but rejected for some particular reason.

Of course they made stainless steel drums, not sure why they opted for that over the Acrolite's Ludalloy (aluminum) shell. Possibly a weight issue? What I mean is, the lighter aluminum shell might have been perceived as "cheap" at a time when the stainless drums were intended to convey power. Weight is usually perceived as quality, so...

Or, perhaps the aluminum was fine for 14" snares, but too fragile (dentable) on larger sized shells?

I would love to see an aluminum kit. Bet that would sound punchy! :)

a few years ago, a dfo forum member bought a large tom that he thought to be stainless steel. when it arrived, it was ludalloy instead. ive heard of a few others as well. seems like someone has a prototype kit in fact.

I've had two Ludalloy shell a 10x14 and a 12x15" both had keystone badges. Also the chrome finish was just a tad less shiny or brighter than a true stainless steel shell was, don't know why it just was.

pretty cool mark. thanks for sharing that. the one I saw was also a 10x14 I think. it had the same finish on the outside as it did on the inside just like an acrolite.

Thx mike, they also weight wise are lighter than the stainless shell was.

A brushed aluminum shell finish, with chrome hoops and Classic lugs, maybe even the Mach lugs. Keep the center bead if necessary. How about the Special Edition Acrolite look? The hoops and lugs also having a brushed finish that matches the shell? I think an acrolite kit would be a real looker!
