Alex Van Halen's rehearsal kit Last viewed: 10 hours ago

Here's a listing for AVH's rehearsal kit on reverb.

Is it plausible that those are his drums? Anyone familiar with his setup with regard to the tom and bass sizes?

To my knowledge, Alex never used power toms, and almost always had standard sized toms. However, if it was a rehearsal kit maybe that wouldn't matter. On the other hand, i don't see why he would have a rehearsal kit that would not have the drum sizes that produce his "sound", and as we all know, Alex has one of the most distinct drum sounds in the history of rock.

To use gear that's out of the ordinary for him wouldn't make that much sense.. But you never know.. I'm assuming he may have used it, but i doubt it.. A signature from Alex would have contributed to it's authenticity..Also, those kick pedals look like cheapo imitation Pearl pedals of that era..

A backstage kit can be anything. I've seen that Neil uses a 4 piece, slight change from his stage kit,lol

I read an article in DRUM! ( in the past year ) that talks about Alex, and one of the things they note is that even in studio his kits had the chains, fire extinguishers,etc... and that all those things help contribute to his drum sound. Makes sense in a way. This could have been his, good amount of emphasis on could here. I mean it's not a terrible price for the kit as it is, could be better. But if there was a way to prove he did use it, great price in that case.

I hate it when these types of kit's don't come with no providence.

Thanks, I was kinda wondering if he played bass drums with 2 different sizes like a Ginger Baker, and the floor tom sizes seemed peculiar, so I thought I'd ask.

It's a nice kit in any event.

I spent a year on the road with VH. I got to know his (then) new drum tech, (may still be) a guy named Rob Kern, who lives in Ukiah, California. I would suggest that maybe you could contact Rob on FB, and get him to assess the kit in question.

They`re not square so I wouldn`t call them power toms.

Thanks for finding that photo of the "mouthy" kit. I remember that it was pictured in one of his early Modern Drummer interviews.

interesting kit. i've been the the v.h. storage unit in the 90's and i don't remember seeing a kit like the one in the ad, there. of course if it was in 5150 for rehearsals then it would be set up all the time.

however that doesn't explain how faded the kit is. it looks like it's been sitting in the sun for a long time. its noted for being orange but i believe its actually a very faded red.

i also don't recall ludwig ever offering orange color. look at the fade pattern on the drums. also notice the kick hoops are not faded as much as the kit. then again alex had a ton of extra drum stuff, so they could of been extras thrown on the kit.

the reason i was at the v.h. storage area was because the band was getting rid of a ton of stuff. i went down with my old boss (todd formally from ludwig) to load up a box truck full of road cases, then periodically thru the years drum stuff was sold off. so if this kit was part of the clean out it was gone before that.

i would like to note that all the extra drum stuff was just that...extra stuff and not any of the well known kits we all know and love (i do know some kits were sold at charities) it was all ment to be trashed (some hdwr was trashed at some point previously) but my old boss said why don't i (he) sell it for him and the money would go to charity. i have one of al's multi clamps holding up my shower head in the tub.

p.s. - the green balance tour kit pictured above does not have power toms. i remember the kit and i believe there was a duplicate set of toms for some reason.

and as most of us know, the "lips" kit was only used at the U.S. festival (which was held approx 20 minutes from me) its been said that a kit alex used previously was covered in the lips for that show. i have no idea what kit was used or if the kit was a extra kit.

here's some pics.
