An Estate Sale Find Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Story time!

I went to an estate sale the other day because I had heard there would be a snare drum there, and from one picture I saw of the snare, I knew it was a Ludwig (Proper lugs.) Figured I'd go check it out. I'm in my early 20s, so not too much money here, but figured if it were a snare from the 60s or 70s, I'd be willing to give the person $150 for it, if I could talk them down. I walked in and the woman pointed me in the direction of an entire drumset, (sans floor tom.) I picked it up and turned the drums over to try to find a badge, starting with the 9x13 tom. It was a gold sparkle Ludwig kit, in great condition. I turn the tom over, expecting a B/O badge, only to instead be greeted by a Ludwig Transition Badge. I knew I had to have this kit, which was a 20x14 bass, 9x13 tom, and what I was almost positive was a 5x14 Jazz Fest. I asked the woman how much she wanted to sell them for, expecting an insane number. I figured she'd done her research.

Instead, she looks at me and says, "Well, I know it's an old kit, and I want to give you a fair price, so I'll give you all the drum stuff (Included a pedal, some stands, and a 16'' Zanchi Vibra Paper Thin Crash, as well as what I assume is a Vibra top hi hat) for $60.

I brought them home, looked inside and they're stamped in red ink, September 29th, 1960, September 29th 1960, and September 30th, 1960. Now this forum may know better, and any help would be greatly appreciated, but I think that there's a floor tom somewhere in that house, that would complete the set. Did Ludwig sell a kit like this in 1960 without the floor tom, or should I ask the owners of the house if it might be somewhere in there to complete the set?

I'm currently in the process of cleaning them up, so hopefully more pictures will follow. I've already finished up with the snare.

Unfortunately, I can't get the images to attach, so here's an imgur album of the find. In addition, here's a single picture of the cleaned up snare.

Great find. Floor toms are often not present for whatever reasons. But many older sets were sold without floor toms. Even "complete" kits from that era often have a newer floor tom added.

So do you think it's worth it to contact the owners of the house?

Alternatively, there's currently on eBay, a transition badge, Ludwig floor tom from 1959 in gold sparkle. Think I should just focus on that instead?

I'd do both...Check with the seller of your drums for sure. But i'd also stay close to the Ebay model just in case. Good luck!

Welp, bought the eBay one. It ended in a few hours, and I figured, can't let the opportunity pass, not sure how often I'll find a perfect matching golden sparkle floor tom, in excellent condition, with proper badge. If there is a floor tom in that house, and I can get it, I guess either go full Bonham, or sell one.

FT's are not found in the kitchen drawer so good bet not there. Wise move on the eBay. You have a great kit and good to see the younger folks get interested in these kits. Enjoy and any questions just ask.

I've been lurking on this forum for a while now, admiring some of the kits that get posted around here.

I've wanted one of these kits since I was like 16 or 17. Got serious about looking into them a few years back, but always figured too expensive. I bought a '76 Supra at a sale in January for $150. Turned my eye to finding a set of 60s or 70s Ludwigs cause it is definitely the sound I have in my head when I think of drums, whether it be Bonham, Ringo, or even now, Kevin Parker drumming on Tame Impala. Only more recently have I been looking into getting a Jazz Fest snare, because you can't have enough snares, and wanted a wooden one to go with the Supra.

I did not expect to find it for $60 though, and I definitely did not expect it to be Transition Badge, figured if I ever ended up with a set, it was going to be B/O, just because of prices.

Cleaning the kit up has been incredibly fun so far. It's fun to put so much effort and to see it come out well. Although I admit, I'm probably not giving it as thorough a cleaning as it needs, haven't been taking the lugs off, just using Q-Tips to try to get as much gunk out of them as possible.

I do have two questions, for anyone who can answer. Is there an easy way to tell if the hardware on these is nickel or chrome? And the rubber on the bass drum legs is pretty messed up/ripped (The leg is basically going through one of them). Is there a way to repair these, or is it best to just move on and look for new ones?

Wow, that's quite a find, and for peanuts. I'm surprised folks just don't do a google search to determine a reasonable value.

There is always a sweet spot of value that a seller ought to expect a buyer to pay. I would expect most of us here would value your three piece kit at ~$700-$800 in found condition (I haven't really studied the photos, but they looked in great shape at first glance). Would you have shelled out if she asked $200? Yes. $300? Yes. $400? Eh, maybe not. I suppose if you got to the sale late in the day, and she had no one interested yet, then she just wanted them moved.

As you found out, you were very fortunate to grab a matching FT so fast.

Judging from the before and after snare pic, I would think your hardware is nickel, but I could easily be wrong.

Congratulations on making a great buy from the estate sale, and for fleshing out the drum set with the floor tom from eBay. The pictures of the bass drum show that the riser bar, and the little L arm to mount the small tom are not present. Those parts are relatively inexpensive to find on eBay. I'm going to be a cynic here, and just assume that you will be swayed by people on the drum forums to put the "mounted" tom on a snare drum stand. In my opinion, that would be an injustice for that great vintage drum set. I urge you to find the couple of little inexpensive parts, and play the drums the way Ludwig intended for them to be played.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Hardware's probs nickel. The kit looks to be in very fine condition; doesn't look to have seen much action. The detailed snare pics look fantastic. The FT looks great, too. That's at minimum a $1500 kit.

Enjoy it!
