An Estate Sale Find Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Looking at your pictures all I can say is "Wow". What a deal.

Back in the day many people ordered or bought sets without floor toms to save money, either figuring they didn't need one or that they could add one on later so there is a pretty fair chance this set never had a floor tom. Very lucky find, especially at such a killer price. My experience is usually the opposite, of yours. I very rarely run into drums at these sort of sales but on the very rare occasion when I have they have always been stratospherically overpriced..."How much are the drums?" "$3000".

You are doubly lucky to find a matching floor tom so quickly, especially with the proper badge and all. I've searched for up to three years for the right floor tom to come along and I wasn't even restricting myself to a particular badge, just a particular wrap. Many folks have been on the hunt even longer. Floor toms seem to become elusive, especially when you start looking for a particular one, even in a very common wrap. So add that lucky find onto your already stupendous snag. Maybe you should have bought a lottery ticket too.

Nickel hardware has a sort of goldish tone to it while chrome has a bluish cast. Technically chrome plating is called nickel-chrome. The silver reflective part in both cases is a layer of nickel plating but in the case of chrome a layer of chromium is added over top of that. It's almost like a clear coat that prevents the nickel from tarnishing but it does add a bluish cast as well. When new or in perfect polish they look about the same but nickel will tarnish over time while chrome typically retains its shine unless you mistreat it in some way.

In regards to the mounted tom, have no fear, that came with the set as well. Just hadn't taken pictures of it. All the hardware is there, including cymbal stands, cowbell, and cowbell mount. Not 100% sure what the cowbell is made of, it looks like copper. It doesn't have any markings on it.

The first estate sale I went to, in January, had listed having over $4000 worth of drums. When I got there, they had a supraphonic, and a 1980s Pearl Export kit. Talking the price down on the supra was a drag, since they had already valued everything else so highly.

Nice score,

they sell replacement rubber feet fairly cheap.

I would just buy new ones and call it a day.

Even more congrats to having the parts and the desire to use the rail consolette to play the drums as they were intended to be played. May you find great joy with your beautiful new drums.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Great deal!! And like most people have said before, floor toms were not always sold with sets. My first Slingerland set didn't come with a floor tom, and that was mainly financial, and to see if I really had interest in playing the instrument. I tell parents all time buy what you can afford.

Nice kit, bad mojo on the acquisition. I know others think differently but I hate the getting one over on the seller .. :) Not sure what I'd do, but..

Welcome to the forum!

Nice purchase, and a stunning event to get the matching floor tom at the same time - and all for very much less than what most of us would consider a fair price. As someone noted, about 50% below market, and quite possibly a lot more to the right person.

Since the mid-90's, I've probably only had one such event where on day one the wooden Dynasonic shows up in CT and on day 2 the 20, 12, 14 set shows up in Texas! Five years later (much more typical time period of a search) the 14x18 bass shows up when I wasn't even looking, though it is from a period about 4-years earlier in the 60's. I spotted it in the corner of a picture one of you forum guys uploaded from the Chicago show. I inquired as to whose display it was and found out it was Steve Maxwell's. He gave me a very good price on it on, so its got a good home.

For you to get that whole set-up in a single day is stunning and it looks like you have a real keeper there. Beautiful color too and those mahogany shells are going to sound fantastic. Nice work getting the snare cleaned up. If that is nickle, it shined up beautifully. I think you're going to like the 20, 13, 16 configuration and with that Jazz Festival too.

Be sure to come back with a finished photo of the complete set.

I wish I could find stuff like this at estate sales. Every time there are drums involved, there's always some guy who's sitting outside the house at 6:00 am waiting to get in first. I almost scored a '59 BDP Slingerland set last year, but some 77 year old man beat me to them by two minutes: $500 with the hardware and Zildjians. I asked him if he was a gigging drummer, and of course, he wasn't, so I got his phone number. I might call him to see what happened to those drums.

Quick question for everyone, and I'm aware this is mostly your own personal taste, but the bass drum hoops are missing a bit of paint in a few places. Do I paint them, or just leave them as is? Or do I go a bit less conventional (I assume) and sharpie them?

Also, anyone know of how to prevent my bass drum pedal from chewing up the hoops in the future? I know both Pearl and Tama make hoop protectors.

Finally, when taking the lugs off, should I worry at all about making sure each lug finds its original spot again, with the same screws, or is a lug a lug, and a screw a screw?

I've gotten my share of great deals, but I'm always jealous when I see something like this! Killer find.
