another "what have I got here?" Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi folks.

I just joined today.

I used to be a woodwinds player and teacher a lifetime ago. I got into jamming on drums with a few friends and did that now and then for a few years. What fun that was! Sure wish I had just started on drums from the beginning - I'd have decent skills if I did. I suck pretty bad as a drummer, especially since I haven't even done the garage jam thing for over 6 years now. Holy crapola! I suck worse than I remember. It's embarrassing. But I've renewed an interest so I dug the set back out and going to give it a proper go this time, complete with lessons and actual practice. What a concept!

Anyway, my set is a '69 vintage (as per serial on badges and stamp inside the shells) Ludwig, in champagne sparkle. I lucked into it at a pawn shop for pretty dirt cheap about 15 years ago. I have been searching a bit and I'm not sure exactly what I have and I'd just kind of like to know. It's a 20-16-13-12. I need to replace the awful student snare, fix a few things & replace most/all the heads, but it's in pretty good shape under the dirt.

So what exactly do I have here?

Thinking an Acrolite snare might complement this set pretty well, especially me being a total hack/noob/rookie drummer. I'm certain a good snare is nice to have, but at my skill level I don't figure I'd benefit by going too overboard by investing in a supraphonic or the like. I feel extremely fortunate to have this kit to learn on in the first place.

p.s. I am aware that the left tom is upside down. I can't remember why that ended up happening, and I'm sure there are other goofinesses to remedy. There are bottom/top heads swapped too for some reason. Must have seemed like an idea at the time to someone - I'm not sure I'm even the one who did any of it. Many others played this kit while it was at the jam location.

Also, the missing black on the BD rims is fortunately just paint and not gouged into the wood, so ought to be a pretty simple thing to refinish that and freshen up the looks.

That`s a Standard, very sought after finish, I think it would come with a jazzfest snare but not too sure.

Catalogs list your configuration as a S-330 5 piece.

For some strange reason, everyone wants champagne sparkle,....don`t know why.

Welcome it's a Hollywood no doubt in the cat it came with 14/22 base all else is correct and it should get a Supra to be a great compliment good luck

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I think he has this.......

Wrong lugs, wrong tom and leg mounts, wrong tom holder, wrong spurs, and they never made champagne sparkle Standards.

That's a "Hollywood" set or at least a Hollywood configuration of 12/13/16/22 and most likely had a Supraphonic snare with it.

Are there any extra holes in the bass drum like it originally had a rail mount on the left side (from the player's perspective)? That shell mount bracket for a cymbal holder on the bass might indicate that it was originally a four piece Super Classic set and then had a tom added and was drilled for the center post mount. That or someone added the bracket, probably to hold a cymbal when the set was being used as a four piece.

Cool set in a classic color. Should clean up very nice.

Yea I looked at the fliers I could find (found '68 and '70 but no '69) and the 20" BD is what throws me off. The Ludwig offerings between the two years apart are significant differences so maybe this one slips in between if we only had the right catalog? I guess it wouldn't be all that unusual for guys to order custom sizes?

Nope no extra holes. Other than some stripped threads which I can fix (machinist by trade) it's all pretty unmolested.

So you think the step up to a Supraphonic over the Acrolite would be worthy? I've listened to several comparison recordings and the Acrolite sounds pretty good to my ears over my cheap crappie computer speakers :) (obviously no cheap speaker will provide an accurate rendering from which to make a reasonable comparison) Probably anything over $25 will be significantly better than the one I've got now (IIRC it's an Olds). I can afford it, I just don't know if my skill level will produce significant results in sound between the two, and I'm not gigging so I don't need to "project" or anything. Then again, I know barely more than nuthin' at all so I'm probably wrong on most counts.

By the way, there's an eBay auction for a similar vintage (few years older at '64) champagne wrap wood shell Ludwig snare which I could try for, but from what I could hear on recordings, both the Acrolite and Supraphonic sound better to my ears over cheap speakers and since this will be a tool and not something to resell, I'm trying to just stay focused on decent sound. I'm not concerned about the snare "matching" the kit, but again, I'd be the last to know.

That`s what I get for just looking at the small pictures being too lazy to proof.

BTW he states it`s a 20. It has 8 lug BD.

You couldn't be more wrong on this one.

What he has is a 1969 Hollywood set. Like others have said, wrong lugs, wrong legs, wrong tom holders for a Standard model set.

Its a small Keystone badge set, with round knob mufflers and the cast double tom holder with the new corporate logo cast into it. This would make it a kit from 1969. The next year, they went to the blue/olive badges.
