Anyone ever seen Rogers in Koa finish Last viewed: 3 minutes ago

Dan,

I love those maple hoops. I know it's not period correct, but I have always loved that look. I have a 1962 20" Slingerland BDP bass drum on which I put lacquered maple hoops and everyone comments on how much they like it.

JC, I am sure if you do some research you can probably figure out how to finish those drums yourself.

Actually, I think that is a brilliant idea. Those satin, flash, mist or whatever they may be called wraps seem synonymous with Big R drums, but since no one knows where to source them, a veneer with one of your experly applied, serious laquer finishes will look fantastic. I would suggest a really deep clear coat as the matte finishes didn't show up until fairly recently.

Thank you, if I can afford the veneer I will most likely do this. I will use my level sealer on it. That will fill in the grain and after the top coat is finished the drums will be so smooth, it will be like a factory finish. Now I cant wait until Monday to price the sheet.

What about the snare drum? I would love to wrap one to match but finding a rogers wood snare drum is expensive. Would another brand of snare just be to weird? Thoughts?

Koa is a cortex wrap. Wears like iron, and though I think it looks great, it is not a popular as other wraps. I don't remember it available in an XP8 set. Don't have these anymore, but still have a wood Koa Dyna.

Is the KOA Dyna a Big R badge or oval? Is it for sale?

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Nice idea/project,I remember a drummer down the street that had a cortex Koa finish on his rogers kit, prob 1971-72,and I liked it right away,of all the cortex wood finishes I always thought it was the best one.

I have seen a few koa wood giutars and the look great IMO. I think it would be killer on a rogers kit.

I saw a dealer site awhile back where they were taking B+B and beavertail swivo kits with trashed wraps and putting nice finish grade wood veneers on them and those came out looking fantastic IMO.

I will see if I can find the site to give you some extra inspiration/motivation.

Hey I would love to see some of those veneer jobs. I got a price today on a 4x8 sheet of 10mil paperback, 235.00. I thought that was pretty good.

You could always purchase a snare shell and get some Roger lugs and strainer to install on it. I bet you could knock out a couple of bearing edges and a snare bed with no problem at all.

Scott, your reading my mind tonight, I just got back from ebay looking for lugs. I priced a shell from drummaker, 56.00, not too bad. The rogers lugs and strainer will be the big expense. I do have some Pearl lugs, strainer and butt, but cant see using those. I like this option, it would be fun to do.

...and you would probably be really good at it. $56.00 is pretty great. You can also purchase direct from Keller, but I always applaud someone purchasing through a vendor as they can use the income. Andy can cut bearing edges and beds for you if you are not comfortable with that. He has done a couple for me and has done a great job.

The idea of building one's own drum is pretty appealing.
