Aquarian American Vintage Drum Heads: Whats Your Take? Last viewed: 33 minutes ago

Loading...

I am considering getting some Medium Aquarian AV heads for my 50's RK restoration project due to the fact that they will fit the drum better.

To those who have used them: What do they sound like? Will I like them for rock music? Are they similar to Remo's Fyber Skin or closer to a standard Coated Emperor/Ambassador? I am not a fan of FS heads on snares....so I kind of just want to know if I am going to be disappointed by these heads when I take this drum out to play....and then just go and buy a coated emperor anyway.

How about the snare side heads? Do you like them?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Adam

Ive used the thin as reso and the medium as batter on a couple of ludwig toms that were slightly oversized..

I'd say that the medium one are more like a coated ambassador.. I think they sounded good and all, although Ive been hearing alot of people that don't like them.. I do however.. they look great btw.. Thing is, they are kinda expenssive, and the hoop arent that much bigger.. in fact, on one of the tom heads was actually slightly smaller than a normal remo head.. if you've got the chance, go to a music store or dealer and try if the heads fit first.

To sum things up.. good heads, look great, sounds kinda like and ambassador, they didnt work out too good tuned low though.. these heads wanna be tuned a little higher than Im used too, but never mind.. the reason I bought these was because they were suppose to be slightly bigger in diameter and this just wasnt the case.. some of the 4 heads I bought was, some wasnt..

Agreed, more like ambassador than fiberskyn, but they are only marginally larger diameter than standard heads. I got a pair of American Vintage snare heads for an old 1940s Leedy and they were still too small. I had to make flesh hoops and use calf for this snare. I hope they fit your RKs OK

I like em on my old stuff, pre 50's. I use the med batter and their reso head. I think the heads provide a nice "bark/dark" sound to the drums. I'm using Vinatage A's on my 50's and 60's RK's and they seem to brighten the sound quite a bit. But I really like the sound of those too. Hope this makes sense or helps.

30's Radio King - 26, 13, 13, 16
49 - WFL Ray McKinley - 26, 13, 16
58 - Slingerland Duco
58 - Slingerland Krupa Deluxe
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 20, 12, 14
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 22 (need), 13, 16
And some others..

I'm using Aq vintage on my RK. Top and bottom. I like the sound. A while back I almost sold this drum until I tuned it and played it. Then I backed out of the deal. Sounded too good. I have another unwrapped RK that is almost the same, with Remo ambys on it. Not a whole lot of difference.

I've got 'em on my mid-60s Club Dates. To my ear, they're like Ambassadors with a bit more warmth. I wouldn't compare them to Fiberskyns at all -- they're much more like a standard coated head than an imitation calf. Nice heads.

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)

I've got both Modern Vintage and American Vintage heads and as Mountainhick says (hi Ben!) they are only very slightly different in size. I've swapped them around on my snares (Ludwigs from 1959, 1963 and 2002) and they all fit. The Americans fit slightly more securely on the 1959 field snare which has slightly oversized wooden hoops (replicas). That has to do with the collar and the hoop, not just getting the head over the shell. In all cases the heads fit over the shells ok.

As to sound...the Vintage heads (both MV and AV) have a nice warm sound but can take quite a while to break in. Don't expect them to wear in as quickly as Ambassadors. You need patience, but will be rewarded. The tradeoff is while they take a long time to wear in they also take a long time to wear out. :)

Thanks for the responses guys!

I think I will give em a shot. What the heck...might as well form my own opinion. Glad to hear they are closer to an ambassador than anything else.

Thanks again,

Adam
