Nice playing Paul.. and the kit sounds great.. good job on knocking up those chimes too...CheersJohn

+1 You don't have to look past my name to know how much I love half-time shuffles. Your bass drum pattern/rhythm sounds like the one Jeff Porcaro plays on Roseanna. You play right in the pocket with great dynamics. I really enjoyed listening to you play.

Thanks John. As you know, the study of Bernard is a never ending task!

Amen! Re: half-time shuffles, between the popular recordings made by Bonham, Purdie, and Porcaro, the only real difference between their renditions of a half time shuffle is in the bass drum pattern they employ. It's the same basic (ghost-noted triplet) half-time groove going on top. My favorite version has always been Jeff Porcaro's. His work with Steely Dan is just outstanding. A lot of their stuff swings real hard because of Jeff. Your playing reminds me of him.

I love your band. Great group of talented musicians.

Back to chimes...

Paul great tune thanks for the clip. Your playing is excellent with such a natural feel. The Rogers sound awesome too. When you have the time can you give us a bit more detail on your homemade chimes please? Those sound cool and if not too hard I'd like to try my hand making some.

I'm a big Steely Dan fan too. Home at Last off Aja is one of my favs with Purdies shuffle. I have to say those triplet shuffles are HARD to learn. I never knew what exactly Purdie, Porcaro and Bonham where playing there until youtube video lessons broke them down. I used to fake it with a straight shuffle on the hats with ghosts on the snare. Now I know better. Those and linear grooves still kick my butt. Someday it'll click. Sorry to get OT here........

Thanks!

Glenn.

Salty-one,

I vote chimes! You are in pristine physical condition, from reading earlier posts, so lugging stuff around isn't that big of a deal. Put together a monster kit and go to town brother!

I don't agree. I made my own set of chimes - I knew them in the studio as Mark Trees. I used quality bronze piping and they sound great. I take them for my Sunday band and get so many comments. I use them in quite a few songs for effect - I play with one hand while I'm using them. They are a bit more work to take, but I have been lumped with the percussion bag anyway, so they go in here. They sound pretty good on this clip:http://youtu.be/Hx5cFMcIHUg

You guys cover any Styx tunes? Your singer has a cool Dennis DeYoung vibe and the rest of you are obviously polished musicians' so it seems like a good fit!

Nice vid btw. I'm a head-banger but I can appreciate a quality band playing almost any genre.

Thanks for the positive vibes! It has been a great week on VDF for that. I still can't believe the drummer from Kasabian is on here - this place is very unique.

Anyway, great question on the chimes and worthy of a thread.

1. I tracked down a place that sold lengths of bronze tubing.

2. Bought a piece and cut it into pieces graduating in length.

3. Drilled and finished each piece.

4. Prepared a nice piece of wood as the mounting bar.

5. Used big game fishing leader crimps and 40lb nylon trace to hang the pieces.

6. The crimp hides in the hole in the bar.

Pics to follow.

PS: as has been stated - use sparingly; and musically.

peace,

pk

Thanks, Drumhack! Carrying a set of chimes to gigs is really no big deal, like you say. If I can still bench 300+, lugging my big kit around is easy ( sometimes a nuisance though). I really appreciate your positive outlook. I think if I can find an inexpensive set of chimes, I'll buy it and have a bit of fun. After all, don't we do this for fun? I also appreciate your comment about being able to value divers forms of music. Right on, brother!!!

Don`t forget to stop off at a local sporting goods store and get an official referee`s whistle, they are better than the other selections. Then go to the shoe store and get one of those big fat boot laces to tie it up with. That`s after you leave the plumbing supply for the tubes.

And they say the drummer is dumber.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!
